I have a hi def .mkv file with two audio languages. I've tried converting it with visualhub but it gives me foreign language. I was told to use handbrake but when i try to open .mkv file it says no valid source found? can you please help? thx

.mkv and Handbrake - Blu Ray or HD
Handbrake 0.9.3 will open a .mkv file. However there are several issues I have come across using blu ray or HD files. Most of these files have DTS audio. Which can not be decoded by the AppleTV or many Apple Players.
I use a windows program called Audioconverter in VMware. This program converts DTS to AC3 5.1 audio. Which allows the AppleTV to pass through the 5.1 audio to my decoder.
then I use handbrake to load the new .mkv file. and I use the following settings. .mp4 x264, constant bit rate of 3000kbps. Video should be set the max of your TV for AppleTV that is 720p which is 1024x768. And do not use Anamorphic as most Blu Ray/HD movies are already in widescreen format.
Audio settings are track 1, is dolby prologic. track 2 is AC3 passthrough. And add any subtitles and let it go.
this should get you a good file for the AppleTV.

I've been using Quicktime (with Perian) to open and re-encode .MKV files in AppleTV for months now. It's very easy and I have never had a problem. (I use it mostly for HD anime files and I inch the included subtitles up a bit to ensure they are not cut-off at the bottom of my TV screen, hehe.)

can you please share your settings and the bitrate of your movies. Plus how long does it take? I tried using quicktime before, but it took like days!
