Hello. Thanks! I am on a iMac OS Sierra. The external harddrive icon is present on my desktop. All my other same make and model external harddrives pin to the dock. When I drag my new one to the right in the dock it just pops out. I even removed the others and re-dragged them in and they work fine. So the doc seems to be working fine - only this drive won't pin to the dock. However an alias of it will. I have formatted it just like the others. Any suggestions? Could it be a permissions issue? Or other? I'm at a loss. It's driving me nuts and there is nothing on google because it's a simple stupid thing that should work.

you could try resetting the dock to it's default (you'd have to re-do all your app choices, etc):
  1. Open Terminal (located in the Utilities folder).
  2. Type (or copy and paste) defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall Dock.
  3. Hit return.
but first; have you tried rebooting? or delete (from the preferences folder in your HOME library): com.apple.dock.plist
then reboot...

I haven't tried reseting the doc yet. I was waiting on to see if there may be a simple answer first. Will deleting com.apple.dock.plist also remove all my pinned apps in the doc? Thanks!

i dunno. you could drag the preference file to the desktop, and reboot. if you 'lose' your pinned apps, you could replace the new pref file with the one on your desktop... and reboot.

am not sure of any of this, but if you want to fix the problem, you're gonna have to try something...

So weird. If i remove the 3 other pinned external drives from the doc then the new one pins to the doc just fine but then the others won't?! Like there is a max or something.

have you tried any of my suggestions? you posted:

"Anything? I'll try anything"

so, what have you tried?

Not yet didn't feel like putting my dock back together. I found a good workable solution. I pinned /volumes/ to the dock. Then one icon holds all my external drives.

great!

btw, the dock is easy to re-assemble; take a screenshot of it, so you know what you had (and where things were)...
