Hey guys,

My iPad 9th Gen 256GB has access to both the iPadOS 17.7 and iPadOS 18 updates.

However, I'm not sure if I'll be seeing any new features with iPadOS 18 because I'm only using an iPad 9th Gen and not an iPad Pro or iPad Air?

It seems safer to upgrade to 17.7 and wait to see how the MacRumors community reviews iPadOS 18 as it's a much bigger download and will take longer to install.

Is it worth it for me on my iPad 9th Gen?

Thank you for any advice!

There is absolutely no reason to hold off on iPadOS 18 whether you get or don’t get Apple Intelligence. There are many benefits in terms of the use to interface and many other aspects. I don’t see it making any performance impacts on your iPad.

iPadOS 18.0 is currently unavailable due to being pulled by Apple after several reports of bricking some iPad models...

Even if you want to upgrade, you can't until the re-release of iPadOS 18.0

I just realized I also have iPad 9th gen but is still running iPadOS 16.7

I am still in the process of getting all photos and videos from it before I Erase All Content and Settings but it will have to wait since it needs to have the glass and display replaced...

Thanks so much for your replies!
lol no, you need an iPad with M series chip to have Apple Intelligence features
Are you laughing because Apple Intelligence requires a lot of CPU power? I'm still learning so I don't know :(

I just checked and it's still ready to be downloaded on my iPad 9th gen. Check again maybe?

Well, you’ll have the same features that the M series iPads do if you do upgrade to iPadOS 18, currently. There is no Apple Intelligence features until 18.1

I'll install iPadOS 18 as soon as I can because it seems safe.

I'm going forward with upgrading to iPadOS 18 and I've read everything here: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/ipad/ipad8d9d296d/ipados but I still can't find any new features that stand out to me?

Apple Intelligence looks amazing, but obviously I don't have access to that with this iPad 9th gen... :(
After Apple Intelligence the next biggest improvements of iPadOS 18 revolve mostly around customization (freely place icons on the home screen, tinted and dark icon themes, fully customizable Control Center) and smaller design changes (reorganized Settings app with more icons, several changes to other built-in apps).

Thanks for your reply DR34MC4ST3R, but can you tell me why I don't have access to Apple Intelligence? I've got an iPad Generation 9 256GB.

Wait, you're saying Apple Intelligence isn't even available for the iPad Pro models???

It will be available for iPad Pro and iPad Air models with an M series chip (M1, M2, M4), starting with iPadOS 18.1 (at least outside of Europe, where it'll launch later). This is likely due to the memory requirements, with only these M models having at least 8 GB RAM. Your iPad 9th generation from 2021 comes with the Apple A13 chip and 3 GB RAM. Apple Intelligence requires certain models to run locally on-device (as opposed to the cloud), and these models require a certain amount of RAM, in this case Apple targets/requires at least 8 GB.

And that is why Apple Intelligence is unavailable for your device. The storage space of your device (256 GB in your case) does not matter for this.

We will likely see a new base model iPad capable of running Apple Intelligence sometime this or next year. It'll likely have an A18 with 8 GB RAM. This is of course just speculation on my part.
