My niece is a phenomenal artist and while she does everything on paper, I would like for her to practice and expand her skills in the digital realm. I am thinking about getting her an iPad [Pro] and an Apple Pencil 2. So my questions are:

Which generation of iPad or iPad Pro works with Apple Pencil 2?
Which apps would be the best for her to draw, manipulate, color, etc?

iPad Pro 2nd and 3rd gen 11” or 12.9”. I believe the new iPad Air does too, but I would stick with a pro if money isn’t to much of an issue.

And procreate is the gold standard.

Perfect! Looks like I'll be getting the iPad Air, Pencil 2, and ProCreate
I'm wondering why? I'm not an artist, however I recently decided to cancel my order for a new iPad Air in favor of an 11" iPad Pro. I spent some time reviewing comparisons on youtube and elsewhere, one of the differences that was pointed out was how the iPad Pro display (ProMotion) was noticeably more responsive when using the Apple pencil. That particular feature is not one that was determinative for me, there are other differences when all taken together seemed to make the Pro much more desirable (speakers, better camera and including flash). I was ready to order the 256 GB Air (32 GB is not enough) and for $50 difference am getting the 128 GB Pro (128 GB is enough but the Air doesn't offer that choice).

I'm just curious. Either one is going to be a great iPad.

I think you summed it up pretty well. I just spent a couple of weeks comparing the two, and they are *extremely* close in my opinion, even in terms of screen responsiveness to the Pencil. But the Pro did edge out the Air, and I think a digital artist is probably one of the users who might notice the difference, however slight.

I hope you are happy with the choice! If you go on youtube and search "iPad air vs pro" you will find quite a few video comparisons.

For example, this guy does a great job in showing how the display is slightly different between the two, when using the Apple pencil:

Everyone has already answered your question, so I won't contribute to that. I personally use a 2018 iPad Pro with Procreate, and love it.

Here is something I don't see anyone else saying. There is a product out there called Paperlike, a screen protector that provides a similar texture to drawing on paper.

It may be of use to her, its not an essential buy, but it's a nice addition, especially if transitioning to drawing on glass.

I don't have any personal experience with the Paperlike screen protector, but I have noticed numerous other iPad reviews mentioning it / sponsored by it.

Then I ran across this review, when I was viewing various reviews comparing the iPad Air vs iPad Pro:

Paperlike is overrated and overpriced.
Many “paper like” thin film screen protector that are similar and better resistant to scratches and glare, while not being as expensive.

I personally use one from SwitchEasy.
