I turned on my MacBook Pro yesterday after being in Windows, when I pressed the power button the display didn't turn on. I thought this would be a minor problem, so I forced it to shut down, then started it up again. to no avail.

I can hear all the internal stuff working (hard disk etc.) so I don't think it is a problem with that. I also tried to plug in an external display (this display had previously been set up as the main display) and it wouldn't show a picture.

I think it is worth noting that after leaving it alone for a while (with no power) the display did work, as did the external display, but after sleeping it for the night there is again no display.

I desperately need it working and any help would be appreciated.
 
You might want to try resetting the PRAM

How is a PRAM reset going to do anything in this situation? That has virtually nothing to do with the display.

I think you should call Apple's support. Do you have AppleCare?

Unfortunately not. And I am not in the country at the moment so I don't have access to an Apple Store.
 
No, those defects are shown normally with distorted colors, lines of many colors, grey/pink lines.

I haven't heard of a defective 8600M GT doing this (OPs problem) though, so I may be wrong.

Oh, well thats a relief then I suppose. Could the graphics card just be dead?
 
I'd take it in to Apple if I was you, if it does turn out to be the faulty graphics card then it'll be repaired/replaced for free, considering Apple's acknowledged the fault and has extended the warranty for that particular piece of hardware to 3 years.

I can't really say. I haven't heard of a case where a defective 8600 didn't display stuff. The defect in those cards just makes color distortion because of overheated and damaged chips, so I highly thinks its not a defect manifesting itself. I much rather incline to think its a software problem, OS or the HDD.

Like I said before, I may be wrong.

Do you know how long that will take by any chance? I will be in England in a bit for a couple of weeks, could they fix it in that time?
