Help! Please need my iPhone unlocked!

Right well heres the story, i received an iphone for christmas , an american at&t version with 1.1.2 (im in the uk by the way, i only got the american one as it was from my dad who bought it over there doing late christmas shopping as her got back a couple days before christmas) anyway he thought i could just unlock it so i looked about on the internet and found a guide, it said to download 1.1.1 and then restore the ipod and load it on, did that, then told me to dial a number (i forget what it is) and go to the contacts menu, add a website and go on it, when i go on it it shows safari but nothing else, its a blank safari page, the problem im having is when i click on it it does not ask me for my wifi connection, only if i press the home button and go back to the "activate iphone" front does it then pop up with the different wifi connections but does not let me press anything, so i have to turn my iphone off, i also cannot put my iphone into restore mode as it just wont let me? Now i couldn't work out how to do it and i was busy with college so i left it but now i would really like to get it working as i feel my dad is starting to feel bad, and so do i! Im sorry about the huge story! But any help would be extremely helpful.

You have to turn the wifi on ahead of time. This is a guide I used the first time I did it and I think it will help you greatly, just follow the steps carefully.

I suggest that you start all over. Download ZiPhone. Restore your iPhone using iTunes. (You can let it restore all the way to 1.1.4 if you get ZiPhone 2.5.) Run ZiPhone.

The easiest way to put it into resore mode is in the ZiPhone instructions: hold the home button whilst connecting the iPhone to your computer. There are plenty of threads with more detailed instructions, and ZiPhone comes with instructions, too.
