App Q&A testing by request.
Details: I have a 2012 iMac running High Sierra, an Apple TV 3, and a Sony AV Receiver.
The ATV is plugged into one hdmi port on the Sony. The iMac is also plugged directly into the Sony via tbolt->HDMI.

Problem: Apple Midi controls are not showing I have any 5.1 (or 7.1, as the Sony does that) options.

Note: both HDMI and the Apple TV (BeagleTV) show 2 outputs.

Configure speakers for either doesn't give multi channel options.

As far as i can tell, I should be getting those options, but I'm not. :(

Can anyone offer suggestions?

wish i could help; i used to do this (2015-16), and it just worked (macbook pro and a yamaha receiver).
are there no options if you click the dropdown menu? (next to '2 ch 24-bit integer..."?)

check the settings on your receiver. try plugging/unplugging the cable. or try googling the issue, maybe others (elsewhere) have ideas, ie

getting 5.1 to work from mac

good luck!
