I have a 2021 iPad Pro. When I make an iMovie (slideshow with music) and am trying to play it over a TV via Apple adapter and HDMI cord, it will not play. I’ve tried different cords, different TV's and a new Apple adapter. Nothing works. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple 2 days ago and they sent me a new adapter. Still won’t work. The iMovie will play via lightning cord to HDMI from my iPhone and from my husbands's older iPad.

Can someone out there with a new iPad Pro please make a quick iMovie with music and try to play it over your TV via adapter and HDMI? I’m trying to figure out if there is a problem with my iPad specifically or it is a problem inherent to the new iPad Pros and the USB-C connection. Also, YouTube videos will not play over the TV via the HDMI connection from my new iPad. However, streaming service movies like Netflix work fine.

Thanks!

Is this the adapter you're using?

I use the iPad YouTube! Connect to device feature for displaying content on to my FireTV and Samsung 4K TVs. You just set it up on YouTube! Setting, link to.

How are you connecting your iPad to your Samsung TV’s?

My main need is to show an iMovie slide show from the iPad to the TV. I will be showing it at a party without WiFi. So I’m trying to show the iMovie on the iPad to the TV via HDMI and adapter - screen mirroring. It does not work for me no matter what I try. Will play fine on the iPad but will not play at all when hooked up to the TV.

You're playing directly from iMovie? Can you try exporting the slideshow to your photo library or Files or another app and play from there?

This is not to say it SHOULDN'T work directly from iMovie, but may be a (hopefully) temporary workaround.

This doesn’t solve your issue but I hook up to my TV with a generic USB-C to HDMI cable I bought on Amazon. Works fine. I also have a 2021 11” M1 IPad Pro. Although, I’m not an iMovie user so I can’t say it works with that specific app.

Ok, here's the deal (just tested this). If you play your video within iMovie and use the play button that's superimposed on the video itself, it will NOT play the video on the TV (it's sound only). You have to press the play button at the BOTTOM of the app.

Thanks for trying this. Mine will not play either way. When I hit either play button, just goes to black screen. I also saved the video to photos and tried to play it from there. No go. I’m so frustrated with this. I guess I’ll be back on the phone with Apple again today. I’m afraid it’s a problem with my iPad. Maybe the connector inside is faulty.

Ok, I made a little slideshow movie in iMovie and confirmed that it plays just fine on my tv via my HDMI cable. I am on iPadOS 15 though. But assuming this isn’t something fixed in the latest beta, you may have a hardware issue.

That is so odd. And you'd think it it were faulty, you'd get NO image at all, but you said you ARE able to get an image of your iPad screen on your TV - just that the video isn't coming through. If you haven't already, perhaps try restarting your iPad and also hard restarting it.

EDIT: Another thing you might try is a different brand of USB-C to HDMI adapter. I had a different problem with the Apple multiport adapter that you're using where I couldn't get my iPad or MacBook to connect to any projector (the image would flicker and go off and on constantly) but it worked fine with TVs. I bought an Anker USB-C to HDMI adapter and it solved the issue. Even though this isn't the same issue, maybe that's worth a shot?

I’ve tried a 3rd party adapter and HDMI to USB-C. Neither worked for anything. Couldn’t even see the Home Screen. I’m almost thinking it’s a hardware issue with my iPad. I’m heading to an in person appointment today.

And you have tried restarting and force-restarting (by pressing and holding top volume button and sleep/wake button until the Apple logo appears) the iPad too, right?

Very curious to hear what the techs at the Apple store have to say. Please let us know!

Yep, did the force restart, deleted the app and reinstalled it. Nothing has worked. They’ll likely do a restore to new installation and try that. I’m really convinced from everything I’ve tried that’s is a hardware issue. It must have something to do with the USB-C connection inside the iPad. Also what is weird is that I can watch Netflix, HBO Max, etc. but YouTube will also not project to the TV. When I try a YouTube video it plays fine on the iPad. But hook it up to the TV and the video just shows the spin icon like it’s trying to buffer - never will play.

Im getting beyond frustrated with Apple. This is the 4th recent device I’ve purchased with problems. My iPhone 12 Pro has the horrendous battery performance - hoping a new battery will fix. Then a couple of years back I had 2 XS Pro Max phones that had near 0 connectivity - cellular, WiFi and Bluetooth - all mostly unusable. They were purchased 6 months apart and returned as Apple was not able to diagnose or resolve.

Well, just as I expected, the Geek Squad ran all the diagnostics, reinstalled as new and it still would not work. The tech said he would have to send the iPad to Apple and they would likely replace it. Rather than be without my iPad for who knows how long, I made an appointment at the Apple store on Monday. While I would have much rather my current iPad been a software and fixed, looks like the inside connector is faulty as I initially suspected. Wish me luck on Monday. This is exasperating. Have spent 5 hours with technicians thus far.

Update: Ended up being a software glitch. At Apple, the tech reinstalled, restored my apps and then reset to factory settings. I’m thinking it was the “reset to factory settings” that solved the problem. Thanks to Owen and his persistence I have a working iPad and it’s my own.

I wish I had received a survey for this appointment. I got surveys for the other two appointments which resulted in no resolution to the problem. Now that I would love to give a great review, I don’t receive the survey.
