I have the HighPoint 7101A connected to pcie 2 and have 3 drives connected to it. The first drive is being used as the boot up drive and the other 2 are raid 0.
I initially was using the hp drivers but wasnt getting the speed through the raid so removed the hp drivers.
at this point In the morning I had rebooted the comouter but hadn’t checked the state of the raid.
later on in the afternoon on checking the raid it only listed one of the drives which wasn’t ‘mounted’ and the other drive was missing?
tried re installing the hp drivers to sort this out but no difference and the 1 remaining drive can’t be mounted? Or formatted.
after restarting again the Mac refuses to start, fans are on etc, no starting beep it stays like this for a few minutes then switches itself off then back on again?
so at the moment I’m at a loss to what’s going on?

any advice would be really great fully appreciated

I have removed the HP 7101A Card and the Mac boots off the old HDD.

There was a error on the first Bootup as Follows:-

Did you checked if your CPU tray northbridge heatsink push pins are not broken? AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement NMI errors are usually the northbridge overheating.

Hi tsialex, thank you for answering. I’ve checked the Northbridge heat sink plastic pins and they look fine the spring is still compressed on both sides.
if I remove the HighPoint card the mac works without error, but as soon as you install the card and boot up it does Nothing then after a few minutes there’s a click then the Mac restarts

Weird, the crash you posted is AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement related.

Did you used your SSD7101A-1 without the cover? The cover is the heatsink for the card PCIe switch.

I'd start checking if the SSD7101A-1 without any cards installed can still boot your SATA disk. Then I'd check each blade/one at a time with a dumb M.2 adapter.

Thank you for your idea. I’ve re installEd the card empty and the Mac booted to the hdd. I installed the SSD which had the os on and it then booted from that I added a second SSD which it booted and I could access this second SSD . The 3rd SSD didn’t register on the system even though the Mac booted with all SSDs in place. I checked the SSD in the other spare ‘way’ but it still didn’t work. So it looks like the drive is at fault?

Seems to, you can test with a dumb adapter or a PC/notebook with a M.2 slot to be sure.

Btw, if you were having constant kernel panics, check if your Mac Pro NVRAM main VSS store is still healthy, frequent KPs can cause a brick with MacPro5,1 since part of the crashlog (PanicLog) is saved inside the NVRAM volume.

Unfortunately I don’t have any means to test the SSD. But logically if a working SSD works in slot 2 say and slot 3 but the ‘dud’ SSD doesn’t work in any of these then surely it makes it faulty? I’m going to try and get it exchanged as it is only a few days old. Do these often go faulty?

It's not so easy. There are M.2 blades that are incompatible with a MacPro5,1 and even M.2 blades that don't like to work with PCIe switched cards.

I recently had a blade from A-DATA that worked perfectly fine with my AngelBird Wings or my AquaComputer kryoM.2 and then never worked when installed in my SSD7101A-1.

Most faulty M.2 are DOA or fail very early on. It's not common to have failures with the recommended ones from the first post of thread below:

Don't forget to check if your VSS main store is healthy, see my previous post.

I've installed the ROMTool and on clicking 'Dump system Rom' I'm getting an error 'DirectHW.kext could not be loaded. The operation cannot proceed.' I have double checked that csrutil is disabled and have installed the program on an empty drive, but I still get the same error?
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Remove any AV/Anti-Malware installed, DirectHW.kext is a false positive. Uninstall ROMTool with AppCleaner, then install again.

Good Afternoon, Ive installed AppCleaner and removed both AVG and Malwarebytes which were both disabled before trying before. Ive removed the ROMTool app also, but still the same error!

Use the search and see what people did in the past to solve it. Btw, doing a clean install on another disk probably will be faster than investigating what is blocking DirectHW.kext.

Hi again, Ive now got the program working. Referring to your posts on Opencore post and having 2 VSS Stores mine is only showing 1.

If so, your NVRAM volume is already corrupt. I'll send you a PM.

@tsialex As I was researching the OpenCore options, I read your posts regarding the NVRAM. Not ever having checked before, or even known about it, I followed your post and checked the VSS store. Was very very startled to see that it states that are space is only 5228.

Clearly I need to get this corrected. Can I ask your assistance in remediating this?
