Hello people.

My friend gave me a Macbook he aquired while he was in Asia (Not sure where). The laptops operating system was in another language, and it had a password on it.

So I reformatted the hard drive.

I'm pretty inept when it comes to Macs, so the basic information I need to know is how to get into the "BIOS" equivelent on a Macbook (I understand it's different than other macs), How to boot from a CD, and what Operating System a Macbook usually comes with.

The only information I have is: 512 MB Ram, and it has a 15" screen.

Thanks ALOT for anyone that can help me... I knew I'd have to start learning about macs some time.

All it says is "MacBook" on the bottom of the screen.

I got that off google, the laptop looks just like that.

I'm not sure where I'm going to find the operation system either but for now I should at least learn how to boot from a CD / DVD so I can be ready once I get it

Oh also will DVD region make a difference? If it's a Computer purchased in Asia and my OS DVD is from some where else..

If the laptop looks just like then it's going to have a 13.3" screen, not a 15".

To boot from cd/dvd, I believe you just hold down 'C' when booting.

The operating system you're going to need is OS X. Presumably 10.4.7 or later as that's what came on the first Macbooks.

You can change the DVD region a few times in the actual operating system, so that shouldn't be a problem

You need the Intel version of OS X (10.4 - Tiger). It should come with it. If you don't have the install DVD, you are kind of screwed without going to eBay. The Apple store only sells the PPC version from what I can tell. You can also try XP/Vista with the drivers provided by Apple, but why?

To boot to CD, you just hold the letter C down after you turn it on until you see the gray Apple logo.

Do you have any advice on how I could install XP on it? I never tried that. And right now I just need an operating system on it no matter which..

I suppose the installation process is similar. I'll go do some experiments, thanks.
