I have an iMac I bought several years ago. It started freezing during regular use, then wouldn't boot beyond the grey Apple screen.

I booted into the startup disc, and after verifying my hard disk, it said it needed repair, but Disc Utility was unable to repair my hard drive, but I was able to copy an image of my internal HD onto an external HD (which I wasn't using for Time Machine, dang it!)

Since, I reformatted/reinstalled OSX on my internal drive, and it has booted up just fine, and all seems ok - however, I'm having trouble getting the files from the image file that's on my external drive. I tried to just restore the files to the external drive and it restored about 27 applications before it said there was an input/output error.

I really just want my photos and music back, if possible. Any ideas?

OK, so I was able to just verify/open the image from the external drive and currently Migration Assistant is working on moving stuff over, so I think I'm good, I hope. I'll post again if something awful happens.
