A family member (who lives elsewhere) got their personal MacBook Air back from Apple Support with the hard drive wiped (as expected).

They only have a cloud back-up of their home directory (user / (name) / {Documents | Downloads | Photos | etc.}.
This was the admin account (no other users).
They don't have a complete copy of their drive before it went to Apple, just the directory.

When they got the laptop back they tried to set it up again, but instead of naming the (admin) account what it was ("John") they chose the auto-suggested name ("johndoe").

How should we go about restoring their laptop so they can use their files?
* Does it need to be wiped and re-set up, using the correct user account name ("John")?
* If they copy the files from the external flash drive (under "Bob") over to the laptop's new user folder ("johndoe"), will that work? (I don't think it will based on past experience.)
* Even if they manually copy files won't they run into permissions issues?

NOTE: They are unable to rename the account from johndoe to John in System Preferences.
