HELP!!!! SR MBP HD dead?

I was on the facebook, macrumors, and engadget, when all of a sudden i got the beach ball and everything froze. I shut the computer down by holding the power button because there was no other way to shut down the computer. I waited 10 minutes for the beach ball to stop but it did not. I went to turn my computer on and nothing happened. I only got the gray start-up screen. I was like, "Damn, this can't be good." So I put in the OS X disc and went to disk utility and this is what I got:

Verify and Repair disk "Macintosh HD"
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Invalid B-tree node size
Volume check failed.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit



Does this mean my 4 1/2 month old HD is dead?
Do I need to take it to an apple store for a new HD?

Please help. This is my first mac.

You are going to have to read up on the options you have for recovering the data.

Just remember that even the super strong tools may take several passes.

Edit:

People may have a less than dire prediction than this thread, just make sure the tools support the OS on the drive. Some don't or may not.

no, it's not your hard drive, just a software issue, run DIU several times to see if things get better.

I have tried DIU many many times, nothing works. I am ok with loosing the data I have on the hard drive. I have a backup with the important stuff. Will doing a complete erase and install fix my problem?

I have good luck in those situations under OS 10.4 with Disk Warrior 3.03. (not with 4.0 though).

Assuming that the harddrive isn't making loud / unusual noise when the beachballing happens (in that case, make an appointment with Genius Bar to bring it in to the Apple Store).

So, depends on how much the data is worth to you.

1. Use Disk Warrior (if you don't have another mac in the house, then you might need to install OSX on another drive, because MBP Santa Rosa won't boot up from OSX disks earlier than 10.4.10.) to repair the partition table or

2. Back up files to external HD.

3. use the gray disk that comes with the MBP, and run hardware diagonstics. (Hold onto to option when you restart with the disk in, and select appropriate option).

4. Erase disk with disk utility
- select: Volume Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
- go under Security options: select Zero OUt Data

5. Install, and copy the documents, etc. back.

6. Get Leopard, new external firewire disk, and use time machine.

I just went through this with my father's MBP I ended up having to wipe the HD re-install OS X and it was good to go but if you need the data you will have to find a way to back it up first

I did the erase and zeroed out all data. Everything seemed to go fine. But when I went to reinstall the OS, my hard drive does not appear when I need to select a destination for installer. It is blank.

So I went back to DIU to try to mount the drive. I get an error saying that the disk could not be mounted. what does that mean?

I tried to verify the disk again since I erased everything, but got more errors:

Invalid node structure
Invalid B-tree node size
Invalid record count
Invalid B-tree node size

if the hard drive refuse to mount then there might be a problem with it, what does the S.M.A.R.T status say? i believe the 'verify' function work only with a HD that has a MacOs installed on but i'm not 100% sure so it might be normal to get errors when you try to verify an empty HD. have you run the apple hardware test to see for hardware problems in your machine?

That error should not appear after you erase the disk, so maybe the harddrive is failing.

I would make an appointment with the Apple Store Genius Bar near you and bring it in (apple.com/retail). You can also call up Apple Care.

The S.M.A.R.T. status says "Verified." I just ran the apple hardware test and it came up with no problems. I think the problem is with the drive because it will not mount. I have tried everything. The computer does not recognize the hard drive in the computer when i try to install the OS from scratch. I have tried everything so I am going to make an appointment with the geniuses at the nearest apple store. Hopefully I will get a new hard drive.
