HELP! Superdrive Not Recognized

I fell asleep to a DVD on my RevD Powerbook last night, and when I woke up this morning and pressd eject, nothing happened. Beachballs. I tried to force quit DVD Player, but it remained in the Dock. I dragged the DVD image to the trash, but it still didn't eject. I repaired permissions, nothing. I restarted to the firmware command prompt and keyed "eject CD," but all I got back was "can not locate drive" or something. In the "About This Mac" system description, the Superdrive is no longer listed.

Help me. I have no idea what to do.

Weird. I'd reset the PRAM/NVRAM and PMU before trying to reboot holding down the mouse button.

I just reset the PRAM and no dice. I looked on the Apple Support page, and they said the the PMU reset should only be done if everything is frozen, which it's not. I don't want to do something that's going to screw me up even further. Thanks, though. Any other ideas?

Resetting the PMU is fine, I did it just last week to my iBook. Nevertheless, if you don't want to then fair enough. Now, what happens when you restart the machine holding down the mouse button?

Just tried it, and no changes to anything.

I verified the disk in Disk Utility, and there are problems: "Volume Bitmap needs minor repair, Invalid volume free block account, The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired."

Applecare isn't awake for another 30 minutes. Anybody run into this before?

Was the PowerBook exactly where you left it when you fell asleep? It sounds like the thing got bumped or something and it was writing to the drive so it's been slightly corrupted. Since you can't boot from the OSX disks, try running fsck.

That's really strange though that the Drive is not recognized, and now you have errors on your Hard Drive..

All is now well. I backed up all my important files onto iDisk, and reset the PMU. And it worked.

Fix this problem before you do anything else. You may regret it later if you don't. Run "fsck -f" in single user mode.
