Hey, just got an iphone and all i want to do is unlock it to use as an ipod/wifi device. (for now anyway) I dont want to install 3rd party apps just yet, but rather start off by getting official updates from apple. So my question is, do i just need to unlock it for me to use as an ipod/wifi device? Or do i need to jailbreak? Also, if i unlock it without any type of service, can i still download official apple updates like the new one coming in june? So, basically, i want to use an ipod/wifi device, but i want to donwload official updates and not 3rd part apps.

Is there any 3rd part apps that are soo good that would sway me to install them?

You probably just want to "Activate" the device. However, just out of curiosity, if all you wanted was an iPod, Music and apps why didn't you get an iPod Touch?

cause i got iphone for $249.

Touché.

Well then, you should download ZiPhone and select ONLY the "Activate" checkbox. This will allow you to use the iPhone but not to make calls or anything like that (Wi-Fi will work). It won't install any third party apps (Jailbreak checkbox is for that). I do recommend you to Jailbreak mind you.

As far as updating goes, you will be fine, just be careful and wait a few days after the update comes out to see how everything has settled.
