EDIT: Ok, I think I got it. For some reason I thought I could do this just with my iPad and my network. I guess not until I get it updated. Hooking it to my Mac, launching iTunes on my Mac, and the choices were there to synch apps, music, and then update. Hmm.

This is really frustrating me. If there is a MR thread or a good Apple link all ready addressing this, please point me at it.

I've been to several sites online purported to help you update your device to IOS5. In my case it is an iPad2. For a simple device, this appears to me to be much harder than it should be.

*Step 1: Upload latest version of itunes?
*iTunes itself-I can't even tell you what version of itunes I currently have. I've been through every menu along the bottom of the itunes page and don't see anything related to the current version installed or the purported button that says "check for iTunes update".
*Go to the Apple Web Site/iTunes page and select download. When I do this, I get a page with a computer on the left and an iPad on the right and when I click on the ipad, I get a page "telling me more about iTunes, but no download link or how to info.
*The app store- does not show any updates for iTunes.
*Settings- has no iTunes settings to check.

Step2: Download IOS5- where can I expect that choice to appear?

Then I ran into this little blurb on the Support.apple.com/kb/HT4972: To update your iphone, ipad, or ipad touch to IOS5, you must erase and restore your device first. HUH?

WTF. Any decent assistance to help the blind man see would be appreciated. :)

You are using a mac? With your iTunes open, go to the top left of the window and click "iTunes". A drop down window will appear and click "about iTunes". That will tell you what version you have.

Better yet, you can just download the most recent version of iTunes at http://www.apple.com/itunes

Once you have the latest version, plug in your iPad and it should automatically prompt you that ios5 is available. Sync your device before proceeding even tough iTunes will make one for you

Thanks guys. My understanding is that after I update to IOS5, I'll no longer have to go through my desktop Mac to update the iPad?

That is correct.

It sounds like OP is trying to use the iPad.

Seriously? You're going to confuse the OP.

He needs to connect his iPad to a computer with iTunes in order to get ios5. How do you suppose he can do that on his iPad?
