I'm using 5.1.1 jailbroken on iPhone 4s. I basically have it jailbroken for MMS on straight talk. I would rather use new features in iOS6 and wait for new jailbreak to come out.

I'm completely new to this process and have no idea what I'm doing.

I'd like to create a backup to return to if I wanna go back to 5.1.1 jailbroken. I've heard blob and SHSH mentioned and have no idea what that is? How do I do that.

After that, to upgrade to 6, I need to restore and then upgrade, right?

Thanks for help! Sorry I'm so green around this.

It's very simple. If you ever want to be able to downgrade to iOS 5.1.1 jailbroken again, you need to have your SHSH blobs saved. Cydia backs them up automatically. If you open Cydia, you should see iOS 5.1.1 listed at the very top...if so, it's saved and you will be able to go back to 5.1.1 if you ever want to. (Edit: Was mistaken on the downgradability from iOS 6...dev team announced the following: http://www.iclarified.com/24547/iph...vices-can-be-downgraded-from-ios-6x-to-ios-5x )

Now, to go to iOS 6, it's very simple.

1: Back up your phone in iTunes.

2: Select "Restore". Choose to do a Restore+Upgrade (it will ask because it knows iOS 6 is out).

Wait until iOS 6 is installed, and you'll have a fresh phone. Go through the first few steps to activate the phone, and one of the last steps of the guided activation on the phone is a choice to restore from a backup. Choose either your iCloud backup or the one you just made in iTunes, wait for it to restore and you should be set.

I just did this process on mine, and it was quick and painless.

My only question before restoring from that backup (we did with jailbreak).. does it carry over the jailbreak stuff? Do I have to be concerned at all that I backed it up while I having a jailbreak and now I am trying to restore to a non-jailbroken device?

So how would I get blob from cydia, assuming that once I upgrade to ios6 cydia will no longer be on device?

I have an iphone 4s on 5.1.1 jailbroken. Can I go ahead and do this without hesitation because I'm just worried as people have been saying you need to change hosts file and all that. I will manually backup photos and contacts. but whenever I go ahead and say restore and upgrade to ios6, everything is wiped out and then ı have to say restore from a previous itunes backup but wouldnt it say that it is already ios6 and wouldnt even transmit files from that last backup?

If you have an iPhone 4S (A5 device), and you want to have indefinite access to jailbreaking on your phone, DO NOT upgrade to iOS 6!!! As of right now, once Apple stops signing iOS 5.1.1, which could happen any MINUTE now, it will be impossible to DOWNGRADE an A5 device such as iPhone 4S from iOS 6 to iOS 5.1.1, even if you have your SHSH blobs saved. Luckily, as long as you are still running iOS 5.1.1 and have your blobs saved, Redsn0w will let you restore to iOS 5.1.1 an indefinite number of times, as long you have iOS 5.1.1 installed at the time of your restore. Don't worry about whether or not you have your blobs saved. If you've launched Cydia even once, your blobs are saved on Cydia's server.

Sorry about the misinformation on the downgrade. Now I've read this:
http://www.iclarified.com/24547/iph...vices-can-be-downgraded-from-ios-6x-to-ios-5x

Seems that while you could downgrade to anything below 5.1.1 with redSn0w...iOS 6 disables that capability on A5 chips.

I didn't have to do anything with hosts. Do a regular iTunes backup (and backup your camera roll just in case) or do a regular iCloud backup.

Upon restore, you will have a fresh phone that will ask you if you then want to restore from an existing backup. If you choose the one you just made (either iTunes or iCloud), it should restore all your data/contacts/settings/etc, minus the jailbreak stuff.

I had no issues at all, and the whole thing (from backup to all data restored) took about 45 minutes.
