If I am instructed to place files in a "local library", is this the iMac system library, or my user library. I wish they had instructed me to use either System Library or User Library.

It's locked down if you aren't the owner/administrator, but I get in Catalina anytime I need. Do you know the answer to my question?

ny somewhere
A script writer.

a script writer app? wouldn't it install files where they need to go? or a script app a la applescript? just hard to get what the point is, without understanding where it comes from.

if it's an app, and needs a library, can you point it to a folder you choose from the app preferences? in which case, that 'library' could be any folder you tuck somewhere (ie in your documents folder).

but again, hard to know without more info...

EDIT: last thought! can't you just contact the developer? & get the answer you need...

The script application edits Music file metadata. But why wouldnt it be in system folder to be used by everyone?

I have written to ask, but I don't know when he will get back. Thought I would try here while waiting. It has to be one of two places, not sure what the complexity is.

IIRC "local" generally refers to a specific user as opposed to "global" which is system-wide. I could be wrong though, so don't take my word for it.

To echo others, hard to tell from what little information has been provided re: what are the exact files that need to be installed, type of files, purpose, etc.

To be honest, sounds like a poorly developed program, as most Mac programs are self-contained (ie. their ancillary files are within the .app structure) or come with a .pkg installer to install into Library folders. There generally should not be a need for end-users for copy stuff around, especially with mucking around the various Library folders on a Mac.

Agreed. Barring some hack or other custom install procedure, there should generally be no need to be messing with the Library folders on any level.

This does not sound like any of the Library folders, but rather a folder (maybe any folder?) on the local machine. As already started, not enough information.

/System/Library is likely protected by sip. Don't put things there unless you're apple.
/Library is for all users
~/Library is specific to one specific user.

The entire issue for me was grammatical (if that's what you call it), what is a "local library"? His interpretation was same as we guessed, either: Library/Scripts or User/Library/Scripts. I make a Music folder at that level if there isn't one, and add the music script to it. The choice depends upon who can use the script: me or everyone. Thank you for everyone's comments.
