Is this just another form of a cable box to watch TV?sorry to ask dumb questions but from what i see looks very involved but will give it a try if it is worth it always like to learn 2 months ago jumped into a fta box and learned how to hack it but with an ecm every few days not really worth it thanks again any and all help would be appreciated

Awkwardtv.org will help you hack it if you want...

An Apple TV is an extension of your iTunes library to your television. Any movie you have in iTunes, television shows, and so on. If you add functionality with Boxee or Plex, you don't need to keep the videos in iTunes necessarily, but you can learn about that at awkwardtv.org. The Apple TV is really a good little box, especially when you add boxee.

And its not all about paying for it. Boxee is free and lets you watch videos from Hulu, CBS, Fox, NBC, Comedy Central, Food Network... lots more stuff I can't think of right now.

No, if you rip your own movies and music you can stream or sync your files to listen and view on apple tv.

Connected to the internet 24-7:
only if you want to download movies or use boxee..

Boxee, plex see post above

Is this just another form of a cable box to watch TV?
boxee,,,,,,

The AppleTV lets you watch/listen to whatever is in your iTunes library on your TV. This also includes photos in iPhoto. Obviously this bit is free!

The YouTube bit is... well YouTube. It's free!

You only pay for what you want. If you see a movie/TV show etc you like in the store you can usually rent or buy it. Every film in the iTunes store has a preview so you can check it out before you buy. Once you purchase something it gets downloaded to your AppleTV then syncs back to your iTunes library.

The AppleTV is not a set top box that allows you to watch TV. Its a gateway to the iTunes store where you can buy TV shows/movies/music.
