Help with buying iMac, not sure what is more worth it

Purely from a value perspective, can someone help me to decide as I'm not too clear on technical details

6-core 8th gen i5 processor

Seems to be 7th gen i5 processor

To be honest, both are more then what I wanted to pay but if it makes sense getting the newer model then I will.

Main use is for web/mobile app design, little video editing, adobe creative cloub

If I had a budget, I'd be more comfortable with $1500

What do you guys think, is the new model on Apple store the best option here?

I personally believe the new one is. You want to future proof yourself as well, and for $200, that's a fairly safe bet. Plus, I've never complained about my computer having more than enough power to do the job, but I can't say that's true about having too little power. I bought an 18,3 in Nov, and now wish I had waited, since 6 cores is a great big improvement over 4. I'm thinking of selling mine and springing for a 6 core or 8 core i9. Not sure I'd be smart to after taking the hit from selling this one.

I suggest you look at something other than a 1TB Fusion Drive. The PCI-e Blade Drive, known also as the SSD, is limited to 24GB, not near enough to install the operating system and frequently used applications. If funds run to it, suggest looking for a model with a 512GB SSD.

Seconded. Stay away from "Fusion" anything. I have the same computer at work as I do at home, the work computer has 2x the RAM and processing power as my SSD at home and my home computer is MUCH faster.

don't target high proc. useless. Just take 16 GB + 256 SSD or more..

I don't know that upgrading the internal storage from Apple is a good idea these days. Both systems mentioned support Thunderbolt 3, don't they? It's cheaper to buy a NVMe SSD from Samsung or the like, put it into a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure, plug it in, and run with it. The only "downside" is having a port in use and something hanging from that port. People are using these are their system drives without trouble now. Depending on the system, it offers faster performance than Apple's own SSDs, which is surprising.

Similarly, for RAM? The 27-inch iMacs allow you easy access to the RAM slots. It's cheaper to buy your own and do the upgrade yourself.

Maybe kaplaninternational can't afford everything all at once, but that's fine. Buy the system, work with the Fusion drive and/or lower amount of RAM, and upgrade them when you can afford them.
