I have a 4G 20g iPod clickwheel. Yesterday while listening to it the screen went blank at some point. I can hear the clickwheel working, and can play music (whatever comes up after clicking around a bit).

I have reset numerous times with the iPod plugged directly into the wall and plugged via firewire into the computer. I just did a factory reset, and it is updating my iTunes library from scratch.

Still no screen visible.

Anyone have any ideas?

One year purchase anniversary is August 18th.

Thanks in advance!!!

You cant call Apple because your out of the 90day phone support, and I assume you dont have Apple Care, so go to the Apple Store and take it to the Genius Bar. They will send for a new one if they dont have a replacment in stock, and WONT charge you on shipping.

But you said 4g 20gb (Color or not?) so they will likely have it.

not color...furthest Apple store three hours away... ROAD TRIP!!!

damn, my 20 gig is also messed up just like that...what could be the problem?!

If a new screen is required, and you're out of warranty, check out eBay: lots of people are selling iPod parts (from broken/dead iPods). I've seen a 4th gen. monochrome display go for as low as ~10$US.

Dont do that. Youll be charged near $45 for shipping and handleing.

It's $30 in the US, or if you have Applecare, it's free. And you can call Apple if the product is broken at any time, no matter where in the warranty you are. I called the other day with a mere 5 days remaining on the warranty because it was broken (I ended up buying Applecare at that time because I got it for $50 as a student, so that was only $20 more than shipping and handling). The 90 day phone support means don't call to ask how to turn on the iPod or press play.

Just to report on my repair job: I set up a service via the iPod web support site. I was charged shipping at $29.95 plus tax. They send you a box, and you pack it up and send it right back (DHL dropped off and picked up the same day).

Two days later received email updates...Apple received iPod, estimate for repair: $0.

One more day: email with update: replacement shipped.

Today, since I wasn't home when FedEx tried to deliver, I went by their center and picked up my new replacement 4g 20gig iPod. Inscribed as the previous one was!

All of this took place in seven days. Pretty amazing and satisfactory service!

I wonder two things, however:

1) There is no indication that the replacement is a refurb. How could I tell for sure?

2) Does the 90 day / 1 year warranty start over?
