Help with formatting usb flash drive( and creating folders)

Hello all, just tryin to help my son out and I’m not too savvy when it comes to Macs and usb formats.

His PS4 is having issues updating which is affecting him playing online. His machine just won’t update to the latest software. I’ve tried everything sony recommends other than wiping his machine clean and starting over.

The last resort is to download the update from PlayStation.com which I have done( it’s on my Mac).

Basically what I have to do is create a folder and name it PS4. Then inside that folder we need to create another folder named UPDATE. That’s where the update needs to be.

I already formatted the usb drive so I know it’s FAT or FAT32 and my stick is usb 3.0 which really is the only requirements.

I try and try but still can’t get the PS4 to read the file. So I feel like I’m not setting up the folders correctly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Disk Utility - make sure you are formatting the top level device, and not a partition. That is important for the next piece of advice: make sure you are using "Scheme: Master Boot Record." That's what PCs use. Also, you can try FAT32, but that's an old MS-DOS standard. Maybe also try ExFat, which won't have the 4GB filesize limitation.

Apple uses "Scheme: GUID Partition Map." I'd bet strong money that's the scheme you are using to format your USB drive with FAT32. A lot of PC devices can't read GUID Partition Map. Again, I'm almost certain this is part of the problem.

Erase and reformat with Master Boot Record, make sure you've got the top-level drive selected, then see if it gets recognized by the PS4.
