Help with Hackintosh for OSX Server

Brief question requiring a long answer. Is it possible to build a hackintosh that will run Mac OSX Server from scratch? By build, I mean get the components myself and construct the hardware. Please could someone point me in the direction of a tutorial for doing this for hackintosh for OSX Server and towards some components that I will need.

I put OS X Server on a HP Proliant, so it doesn't need to be from scratch. You would be better served by going to Insanelymac.com and checking the compatibility of individual components.

As weckart said, you are better off going to Insanelymac or tonymac. But the short of it is that you will need to buy compatible components, i.e an intel processor and a compatible motherboard--Intel P55 models are best. I recommend a Gigabyte P55M-UD2 if you can find one.

As for installing, it's pretty easy as long as you follow directions. Essentially you download and burn a boot CD, insert that followed by OS X, install some kexts via a handy custom installer, and you're done. Pretty painless.

I did this. I used the iBoot + multibeast method for tonymacx86.

OSX server installs and works just as well as OSX client does. You can follow any guide for hardware and it should work fine installing server. I have been using my hackserve for a couple months now without any issues, I can even run updates from software update.

If it helps, I have two hackinmacs (and a legitimate i5 MBP), one is running a standard 10.6 kernel, which is an i3 based desktop machine (that cost me less than $400 to put together and is running at 4.4ghz stable) and the other is an older dell mini 9.

The i3 runs 10.6.6 on a vanilla kernel, meaning, since 10.6.3 I can hit the update button and even if it replaces the whole kernel I'm fine, something to keep in mind when you select your components

The dell mini 9 is running Snow Leopard Server. I can't say it's perfect, but I don't dare update it because the ATOM is not a supported CPU and any kernel past like 10.6.1 will break it.

Right now I'm trying to get Kerberos to actually work as well as client side log in. It used to only work when I created a local mobile account, but wouldn't sync, then it would work but had no home folder, and now there is a local home folder and the client machines can't log in for some reason.

So just ask yourself: "Is it worth it?" Do you really need Snow Leopard server to get the job done?
