Hello. We have an iPad that is signed into with my wife’s Apple ID. It won’t update because it says there isn’t enough space. I’m confused because when I go settings>general>iPad storage, it says only 12.4 of 32GB used. But, when I go settings>Apple ID>iCloud, it says 50GB of 50GB used which im assuming is on her iPhone.

So, does the iCloud storage dictate every thing and not the iPad storage?

Is there a way to stop my wife’s iPhone from connecting to this ipad? Im
Assuming that’s where the iCloud Info is from?

thanks.

Very odd. I think what you're seeing is that your iCloud storage is completely full (I take it she's on the 50 GB plan), but you are correct that you should be able to update the iPad as long as there's enough local storage. I can't really explain why it would matter that her iCloud storage is full for purposes of updating the OS. Basically, you just need free space so that the device has enough space for the update file, which can be several GB. If she's only used 12 out of 32 GB locally, that's way more than enough to update.

Maybe it's doing an iCloud backup before updating in case the iPad gets corrupted during the update process.

Yes. Before most IOS updates a backup is run. If you have set your preferences to backup to an iCloud which is full then it's a problem. If you can try changing the automatic backup location from iCloud to your computer.

Try disabling iCloud backup.

Thanks for all the replies. So I turned off the iCloud back up (red arrow) and you can see at the top that the iCloud bar still full. What happens if I log out my wife from the iPad? We don’t want all her emails, texts etc going to the iPad. Thanks again.

That makes no sense. Your are presenting a screenshot of your wife’s iCloud account. It’s not the iPad. It’s full. Changing your settings on the device now won’t affect the cloud much.

You need to first get an understanding what is taking up the cloud storage before you either clean it up (manage storage on the cloud, see your screenshot) or purchase more storage.

If you don’t want her to receive emails or text messages on her iPad as well (who wouldn’t...) you can turn that functionality off in the Apple ID settings in the settings app.

Yep. This.

Assuming you've upgraded devices a few times, chances are there are old device backups that you can safely delete.

I never knew there were old backups you could delete. How and where do you find those? Thanks.

Turning off the backup isn't going to delete the data from iCloud, it will just stop further backups from being made.

Settings —> Apple ID [at the very top] —> iCloud —> Manage Storage [again at the top] —> Backups [from the list of things using iCloud space]

You'll see a list of devices that have backed up to iCloud and how much space each of those backups is using. When you click on one of the devices in the list, you're presented with a red "delete backup" button.

Thanks. That took away around half a gb lol.

So, this is more of a family iPad. What happens if I sign my wife out of this iPad?

Also, this is pic of iCloud storage. The photos 32.5GB and Messages 17.1GB I assume is whats on my wife’s phone right now. If I go into each of those and delete and disable, will she lose what’s on her phone? I just don’t want the iPad attached to her iPhone. I want this to be it’s own thing, working off the storage it comes with. How do I make that happen? There must be a way. If I sign her out in the settings, can the iPad still be used and will that stop this iPad from being linked to her iCloud and Iphone? Thanks again.

Something got stuck in Photos on my iPad, so it tells me that it can’t backup to iCloud because there is not enough space on iCloud. On my 50 gb it is still about 28 gb free space, so I don’t know why wouldn’t backup about 2 gb?
Should I erase iPad and restore it to solve this?

I would try connecting the iPad directly to your computer and choose the option to backup to the computer's storage. Then maybe investigate what's going on with your iCloud storage. I prefer to backup to my computer anyway to save on iCloud space.
