iPod Help with Ipod Nano and album artwork.

I have an Ipod nano the 5th generation I forget I bought it last June. Anyway I had it synched with my macbook and I had to get a new hard drive . So I went into my itunes and got album artwork for all my songs (by right click then get album work) but when I put the songs on my ipod they were not there!. Also when I try to add my own artwork ( Right Click>Get info>Artwork>Add) it will not let me select the artwork that I want. Could someone please help?
