iMac Mini
Samsung Galaxy S3 unrooted on Verizon.

Was rooted by a friend running Alliance. Accidentally did an update wiping some stuff out, like Alliance no longer showed. Apparently custom ROM could not be fully loaded so I could boot into Alliance. Superstrap and SU no longer installed. Root Checker app says that I am no longer rooted.

Long story short, phone is still on 4.3. Would like to update to 4.4 but simply cannot. OTA update fails every time. Attempted to flash the phone back to stock using JOdin3, and then Heimdall on its own. JOdin3 wanted to work, but will not apparently as there is an issue with buffering on large files. OK, try Heimdall. Got further than I did with JOdin, but again, it will not take. Watched a 17 minute long step by step tutorial on YouTube, and followed it verbatim. Apparently others have run into the same issue as myself. I do not have a Windows machine nor do I really have access aside from a work computer and I cannot load that stuff at work.

Can anyone help a total flashing no0b with this so that I can get rid of this annoying as all get out constant reminder that there is an update? Twice now I have accidentally accepted the attempt to update the software, and twice it has been at the most inopportune times.

Download Kies 2.6. http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/

Kies 3 for mac might work with the S3, since there is no Kies 2 for mac. Give that a try first. Otherwise you will need a PC or virtual setup with windows.

Then click the tools tabs on the top, and select "Firmware Upgrade and Initialization". It will ask you for the model and serial number. Then it will load a clean latest stock firmware. Should be smooth sailing, as I did this plenty times with the S3.

Downloaded and installed Kies 3 on my Mac. Connected phone, went to Tools, selected Firmware Upgrade and Initialization. It said "SCH-I535" does not support initializing.

https://towelroot.com

I am not exactly sure what that site is. I am guessing that it will let me root my phone? Will that help me get this fixed?

You will need to use Kies 2.6 on Windows then. 99% sure that will work.

Just download Windows 8 and run under any virtual machine if you don't have a Windows PC around.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I am caving and having the husband of a coworker just do it on his PC. He is very familiar with rooting and flashing. I spoke with him on the phone and it will be done on Saturday morning.

Just to update -

Everything went fine. He had everything downloaded and ready to go when I got there. Once it was done, I updated it to 4.4.2 and it has been running smoothly since. Apparently I did not have the correct recovery file so that might have been an issue.

Thanks everyone for the assistance here.
