Hey guys, I'm pretty new to the apple tv world, just got it last weekend, and I just started ripping my own dvd's this week. I have a couple of questions about the Metax program that everyone uses for tagging their rips.

It may just be me, but so far that program doesn't find any of the tags automatically that I would like it to. So far I've ripped Jurassic Park, Star Wars (Ep IV) and Casino Royale....all pretty popular movies. When I have Metax open up my movies, it does not seem to pull any of the correct data in. Am I doing something wrong or missing something pretty obvious here? Thanks.

Also, do most movies have Chapter names? I noticed that Star Wars did have Chapter names. Would Metax be able to find those for me automatically? Thanks.

I use the Windows MetaX so not sure about the Mac version if that is what you are using. I use TagChimp for most of my tagging. In the Windows Version I think you have to set the options to check automatically. Most movies in TagChimp have the Chapter information but not all. With the windows version you can have it check B&N (in the chapter display) then select the chapter information and drag it over the chapters and it updates easily.

When you open the file in MetaX, does the left sidebar get populated with movie titles? It should generate a list of titles from Amazon and Tag Chimp. Then, you select the one you want and go from there. You may need to or want to change some of the data in the fields, but most of it should be correct.

Are you connected to the Internet when using MetaX? The info needs to be scrubbed from the web.

Also, don't forget spelling is key. Alot of times the movies that you use have the original DVD title which, for example, Pineapple Express, was <pineapple_exp>. You do need to retype it with the actual name. Could also be your problem. Also, I don't recall off-hand, but are there preference options for using tag-chimp data or not?

MetaX will not search for data

MetaX has stopped working for me. No matter wht movie I put in it will not search for data. Any idea why?

No Search for me too

Im also using the latest mac version ..

but its very erratic, somtimes it gives results .. but sometimes not.

I mean with the popular ones its not giving any result, whereas old and little known movies are getting good results.

One point here, is that all the results are only from TagChimp . no Amazon or IMDB results are coming.

Ive tried remaing the file, using the exact IMDB title , and also unchecked all the columns .. still no result.

Can I not force the results in some way ? Like search only from Amazon and not from Tagchimp or something ?

Another thing .. how do you get automatic IMDB results ?

The Mac verson of MetaX has lost the ability to automatically grab information from Amazon. Something about Amazon changing their system and the developer of MetaX being preoccupied (a guest developer updated the Windows version). IMDB works for me if I go to the top and hit the imdb button.

Yeah, and you're not going to see movies/TV from Tagchimp that were added after February 2009, thus none of the recent films. Here what was posted on the Tagchimp forums back in September:

"There are quite a few of you that are wondering why your movies aren't being added to tagChimp. Well, it's because you're a MetaX Mac user, aren't you? HUGE updates were made to tagChimp back in February that required new ways to interact with the tagChimp API. To help clean up new submissions, new guidelines were implemented. If a program didn't meet those guidelines the submissions were rejected. Unfortunately, MetaX Mac doesn't meet those guidelines. It should when a new version is released. I apologize for the inconvenience and misery this has caused you, but it really is for a good reason. I'm a MetaX Mac user too."

Unfortunately, as the developer is no longer supporting the mac version, a new version is unlikely.

I like MetaX as well and continue to use it to tag any of the older stuff that I add to my media library but for anything newer, I'd suggest giving Vidalin a try. Not nearly as robust as MetaX but very easy to use, only adds tags for info that can be displayed on the Apple TV, and also has a lookup feature.

iFlicks is currently my tagger of choice. The only thing I don't like is it doesn't support chapter renaming like Meta X. Also, it flattens your file down to a .MOV file from .M4V/.MP4, which is annoying.

darn !

That is really lame !

Why has he done that ? any reasons ?

I will give this Vidalin a try though !

Now maybe ill have to change my plans completely .. earlier I was just converting all the AVIs to M4Vs by Handbrake , and tagging using MetaX .. now ill maybe look into Plex / XBMC solutions .. cause no point converting, and not getting what you want

Thanks for that info! I'm now happily running the Windows version of MetaX on my Mac via a virtual machine. It works better than ever.

Im gonna give that a try ..

Im already using ID3 Tag Renamer on WinXP cause There is no good alternate on Mac ,, so be it !

Just one problem .. hey thats the reason I switched to mac .. cause its so damn cool ,, but I guess you just cant leave windows behind

Update Update

Guys .. I just found out ..

Try using the new Subler .. its getting stuff from Tag Chimp too ..
Its not as awesome as MetaX . but does the job ..

Also another one called Identify is good .

Ive tried both .. they give decent results .. but I guess Subler would be the one to go with ..

Ofcourse We will miss MetaX :(

I've been running Subler for two weeks, and it's fantastic. I love everything about it (tagchimp retrieval, cnID tagging, etc.). If the developer can find a way to include a queue for prepping a load of TV shows and movies and then walking away for the tag writing portion, this will be THE program to use.

One reminder-To make sure this new crop of up and coming taggers doesn't go the way of MetaX, maybe everyone should throw a few donation dollars towards the Tagchimp and Subler devs. Some of these programs are very close to being a great answer for mp4 tagging, and it'd be a shame to see them die now. And no, I'm not in any way affiliated with either of them.

But it is better to be a symbiote than a parasite. :D

If the dev for Subler is listening, is there any way to implement a 'chapter tagging/chapters available with this Tagchimp title' feature like MetaX had? Since the Tagchimp started going through and weeding out bad tags, I've started to trust the chapter markers again. Just a thought...
