Help with OS restore please! :) Final Uni Term Deadline imminent!

Hi,

Vectorworks stopped working on my laptop this afternoon, so I restarted my cpmputer asuming it was something to do with the dongle.

Since restarting it, it won't start.

I press the power button, and the grey screen with the apple comes up, and no startup tone - taking into account that I muted my speakers before restarting the computer because I was in the library.

So, I'm willing to try anything. I have the OSX restore CD's ready, but when I insert them nothing happens. I've reset the PMU (or whatever it's called), and I've tried holding down shift when booting up. Nothing.

Any help would br greatly appreciated - can't send laptop away as am 2 days away from a major Final Term deadline and all files are on laptop - as you can see I'm desperate!

Please help in any way you can.

Laptop Specs:

Powerbook G4, 1.5
about 25Gb free gard drive space.
About 2 years old - did an OS restore 2 months ago due to different problems and have had no problems since.

Yank the harddrive out and buy a 2.5'' external USB enclosure, find a friend with a computer and rescue those files!

Don't know if this would work, considering the current state your PB is in, but maybe you could start up in FW Target Disk Mode (connected to another computer, of course) and save your files that way. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the help, I managed to restore the OS system (archive Install).

Problem is now since restoring it, it's running ridiculously slowly. Like, 5 minutes or so to open mail,

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be?

You need to free up some space on your HD.

Sounds to me like your HD may be dying. Mine did the same thing shortly before it died.

I concur. Dying hard drive. Go buy an external (or borrow one) and back up your files ASAP.
