So I backed up all my photos on an external hard drive from my 2015 MBP. Bought the M1, and when I try to view the photos with the hard drive plugged in, I get a "The operation couldn’t be completed. (PHPhotosErrorDomain error 1000.)"

Ive tried repair, tried everything ive read online. Does anyone know ? Im running latest Mac OS, ive got 5 years of photos that I may have lost.

Im am sorry for your problems. Just to understand: in what state your photos are? Folders with single files inside? A Photo gallery? The archive Apple Photo create cannot be transfered with a normal copy; you must let the program to create a new gallery downloading them from iCloud.

I agre with Marioz we need a lot more info to help. From the error message it sounds like it is a Photos Library on the external. Was it your iCloud Photos Lib on the 2015 MBP? If so, are all your photos visible in iCloud (sign in to iCloud.com).

How did you try opening it? Correct ways would be either clicking on the Photos app dock icon with option key held down then selecting the library in the window that appears. Or double clicking the library file on the external.

Managed Apple Photos Libs can be simply copied from one location to another. If the library you are moving is also your iCloud Photos library then after you have made sure it is the System Library and enabled iCloud Photos on it (in Prefs) it will sync with iCloud (says "uploading").

If you have done all the above and if it is your iCloud Photos Lib, I would try what Marioz suggests, create a new Photos Lib, make it the System Libary and enable iCloud Photos and it will download fresh copies from iCloud.

I suppose some libraries are corrupted, in such a way I suggested to create a fresh copy of that.....

Yes downloading a fresh copy would certainly avoid some problems. Before doing that he needs to make sure it is all OK in iCloud.com (assuming the library is an iCloud Lib).
