Where and how do I get my pics that were on Snow Leopard for 7 years when this happens, after an update to a new OS.

It's in Apps but it's got a white cross through it, so I think the pics are on there because although greyed out it shows several gig.

iPhoto is no longer available from the Mac App Store. Use the newer "Photos" app instead as it is much more robust and will open all your older iPhotos pictures and library.

Thanks for the quick reply, but when I click in Photos, there is nothing there, that is what took me to App store trying to import, and on import I don't know where to find them?

All the missing pics all show in the options for changing desktop picture so I know they're on here somewhere, but 'Photos' is still empty, it hasn't imported one. Not sure how I can get them in to that?

Are you sure? When I first installed Photos, it was able to import my iPhoto library and create a new library from it. Have you tried to import your iPhoto library to Photos? I no longer have iPhoto installed and don't rememer the step by step, but I know it's possible and should work for you as well.

There is no iPhoto library visible, but I saw the pics in the options for desktop wallpaper so know they're somewhere but it didn't import them to Photos no

I don't mind using the new Photos, I just don't know how to access the thousands of pics that were in iPhoto. They're on here but any idea where?

there
Welcome to Apple 2018!
NEW PHOTO likes "ALBUMS"! the middle tab.
All the photos are there, downloaded, previous, camera card photos and screen shots
the left tab "Photos" are pictures from an apple device like a iPad or iPhone.
SHARED is iCloud photos
PROJECTS i have no idea and could careless,.

you might have to move your older pictures into PHOTO 2018 like i had to.

see, apple has taken over! their stuff first, not yours!

hope this helps!

There's nothing anywhere there no. When the list comes up for importing the iPhoto is greyed out, with a white line through it, but was quite sizeable so they're in here somewhere. All the other options are irrelevant. Couple of folders in downloads which have pics in them, but the big bulk of iPhone downloaded photos from 8 years, that went in iPhoto..... gone, but not forgotten

When you first ran "photos", did you see this Preparing Library window?
Pretty hard to miss because it takes quite awhile to complete, the larger your iPhoto Library the longer it takes.
Once completed I end up with 2 albums in my Pictures Folder, 1 for iPhoto and the other for photos.

Hey, No, nothing. Just these options, but doesn't offer me that, if I try to import into photos.

in you old folder file, the one with the arrow, do 2 things (please)
drag the photos onto another source, like an external drive or dvd disk.
cypher the good ones, put this into a new folder- place into source call that "New Photos" or anything
import that new folder through PHOTO 2018 by plugging in the source into the mac.
delete the old iPhoto app, because that get confusing next month when you need to do something photo wise.
this from my past experiences with 5,ooo photos and 4 OSXs upgrades.

i hope this helps

You've lost me, what folders with the arrow? How do I get to these folders that were so easily accessible before they changed Finder

Have you tried a simple Spotlight search for ".jpg" or ".jpeg" as a way to locate your pictures?

Yeh, it just brings up the ones in Downloads or Documents. And only a handful of them though.
Something else that's a pain. How do I get to folders like I did before, like 'Pictures' and 'Library'. Used to be so easy and straightforward, and they were all just there, by clicking on the user name or whatever in Finder. Where has all that stuff gone and how do you find them easily. Same as 'Yesterday', 'Today' 'This week' etc for finding recent files, and now you just have a load of coloured tags where they used to be... Can you get them back in that list of Favourites in Finder where they used to be?

None of what you are describing happened to me when I upgraded to Sierrra.
Finder and folder structure all remained the same/
Sounds to me like you may have a corrupted install, maybe time for a slash-burn and clean install.
Hopefully you have been making backups, Time Machine or Cloned preferably both, so you can retrieve
your data.

Peter Franks --

WHERE are the "old pics from Snow Leopard"?
Are they on your internal drive?
Are they on a backup drive?

PAY CLOSE ATTENTION to jbarley's reply #6 above.
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you follow that link and download iPhoto 9.6.1.
It is THE ONLY VERSION OF iPHOTO THAT WILL RUN UNDER SIERRA.

Install iPhoto 9.6.1 first, and see if it offers you a path to import the photos from your old iPhoto library folder.

Look in your home folder.
Look in "pictures".
Is the "iPhoto library" there?

It looks like "only a file", but it's actually a folder with all your older pics inside.

When you first launch iPhoto 9.6.1, it may need to update the old library before it can open it. So... this is something you have to do, if you want to use iPhoto and Low Sierra.

IMPORTANT:
I believe that once the library has been "updated", YOU WON"T BE ABLE TO OPEN IT RUNNING Snow Leopard ANY MORE. (I could be wrong)
So be sure this is what you want to do before you do it.

I'm thinking that once the library has been updated with iPhoto 9.6.1, Photos may then be able to open it, too.

This has worked, they were internal, they did carry over, but didn't automatically go into 'Photos', like they did when I upgraded to El Cap, but for some reason they didn't with Sierra. Much appreciated people. Photo Library is empty, and Photo Library 2, which it also created... does hold the old pictures in when I need them. No idea why, but doesn't matter, as I can now access them.
