Help with POP3 E-mail

The company that hosts my website allows me three POP3 Email accounts. What is POP3 email and how do I access it? Currently I am unsing the email forwarding that my web hosts provide, but this doesn’t look very professional because all of my e-corospondence has my redirected email address. Will a POP3 email account have my home domains address? Am I asking the right questions? As it stands, all I use are web based email accounts, which don't require the use of M$ Outlook or the like.

A pop3 email account is an account that does not require a web portal; to put it more simply: portal email means you go to a website, enter your info, and use it. pop3 lets you use Mail, or Outlook, or any other email client.

If you create pop3 accounts on your website, you can have an account @yourname.com. Many people buy domains just for this purpose, then never put up a site-- it does look a lot more professional.

If you're using OS X, i would recommend using Mail to access your pop3 account. Simple to learn but somewhat powerful underneath. It's a hell of a lot better than hotmail

Hell yeah! - but if you do still need to access hotmail you can still use Mail:

It's still a beta, but it works well.

if you use a real mail client like Mail.app or Gyaz you can put anything as your 'From' address. (in most cases anyway, some isp's will limit this is address' from their domain only)

your domain provider probably won't give you an smtp address to use and instead you should use your isp's. the pop3 and smtp servers don't need to be from the same place. the same you say get email from john@mynewdomain.com redirected to john@myisp.com collect it fromt the pop3 server then reply telling Mail.app or whatever that my email addres is 'john@mynewdomain.com'

I am running 9.1.x. I can't upgrade to OS X until I can afford a new computer and software. The real problem is affording the software. I can’t afford M$ Office and an Adobe suite as well as a computer, batteries, and Apple Care yet. I am working on it, just like many of you. If there is a good OS 9.x app that anybody would recommend, I would love to here about it.

you could use eudora. it is a free email client. download the os 9x version and you are off.

If your ISP doesn't let you send mail from any address you like (i.e. NOT the email address you got from your ISP) you can set up sendmail (mac osx is basically the bones BSD Unix underneat all that aqua ) to act as your outgoing mailserver. It's quite tricky and not really a great idea if you don't have a clue what you're doing. I found a tutorial once, can't remember the url, just google it.

well for one he just said he is on os 9 with no way to upgrade. secondly, if a person is asking about what a pop3 server is setting up sendmail is like asking a 7 year old to fix your car and handing them the instruction manual.

there are os 9 mail servers, though i believe they are commercial. there are also list of open relay smtp on the web. spammers use them to make my life hell. but you can use them like a normal person too.

Hopefully getting your POP3 accounts set up won't be a problem. My experience with Eudora is that it's overly complicated and a hassle to use, but there are other clients out there... www.versiontracker.com. Many domain hosts provide a web interface that you can use to create/manage POP3 accounts... then you just plug that information into your client, and you're connected

O'Reilly has a couple of sendmail tutorials here and here

i would however reconmend replacing the ever complicated Sendmail with Postfix which is a much simpler and nicer piece of software. the two interchangeable. you can find a tutorial on this here

for general hints and tips you can always google for it but since everything you will find their is either linux or bsd and not os x you have to read between the *nix lines... i can reconmend macosxhints.com for some good tips. just do a search for sendmail or postfix.
