I received a replacement iPod touch 16gb 1st gen yesterday. Of course, the people over at apple didnt realize the iPod i gave them had 2.1 software on it, and then gave me an ipod with 1.5.

I had no problem going to iTunes and downloading 2.2 software, as it realized i already bought it, etc. Once downloaded, i plugged in my iPod, it said extracting software, preparing ipod for restore, restoring ipod. It got halfway through restoring the ipod when a dialog popped up saying unknown error, could not restore the ipod.

I went to a different computer (the only other one within the house). Repeated the steps, and itunes did the same thing, unknown error, etc. Now i cannot figure out how 1. how to download 2.2 software over again, where can i find it on the itunes store? and 2. obviously, how to fix this...help please.

It's not an actual link in the iTunes Store, you'll have to download it either from Apple's website (they should have a link on their iPod + iTunes page) or by hitting the Update button when your iPod is plugged in.

If that doesn't give you 2.2, I'd go back to the Apple Store, tell them what's happened, and hopefully they'll give you an iTunes card or something. Maybe somehow your iTunes has forgotten you've purchased 2.0 (you'd have to have purchased it to get 2.2), so it won't let you update any further (because 1.1.5 was the last software literally available to every touch owner with no fee).
