Hi, my 10 year old son has to invent a product and then make an ad for it and later a video commercial as a school project.

We looked into photoshop but is is $700. Since I am totally not design oriented and know from nothing about this subject can someone suggest a more cost effective option to photoshop. I searched this forum and found gimp link but can not access it...any help appreciated.
thanks, :)

He's 10, learning photo and video editing software is a huge challenge.

For free, you can use gimp for photos, for <$100, Photoshop Express is available. Student pricing on full photoshop should be less than $700. For what he needs to do, gimp has more than enough features and the price is right.

I don't know video editing software. Do you have a mac? iMovie is a great place to start (relatively simple, and you already own it).

EDIT: gimp.org seems to be down right now, try again later

Many people also use Pixelmator ($59)

The best bet (by far) is to shoot the video properly in camera. Storyboard all of the scenes and use 1 take each. Press play at the end and woila, a commercial.

exactly this everything best in camera use gimp ect. but may i also add a pice of experiance and opinion , i am nearly 16 and coming towards my final digital art gcse i have produced portfolios of work done in photoshop in desighn and imovie and will be doing A 10 HR exam soon ive done everything from ad's to magazines and photography i started the gcse when i was yr 9 so 12/13 . Now at school i used photoshop id and imovie . i wish that school used gimp or preferably gimpshop (gimp with the photoshop menu's) beacause photoshop is expensive and what you stgart to lean to use willl be what you use the rest of your life the reason why photoshop is cheap for students.so basically use whatever the school use or gimp shop preferably or student photoshop if you want
