help with software upgrade

Hi.

I currently have a macbook air with Os X el capitan v10.11.6.
please advise how to upgrade software as i cannot get other apps or do software updates on other items without ugrading the system.
when I go to the update icon in teh app store, it says there aren't any updates available,
