Hi

I am writing a novel and I need some expert advice / input about some mac related stuff.
I'd be really grateful for any information I can get.

In the novel I need the husband to be able to listen to all his wifes conversations while she is away in another country. (Needless to say she does not know!)

He gifts her the Apple watch and Ipad that have been doctored so that he can spy on her all the time.

It need no be a real app / spyware. But I need to write a convincing enough description of an app he he gets privately made by a tech genius.

The watch needs to be a constant live feed of her conversations, not just phone conversations.
He needs to listen in from the app on his iphone / mbp etc. back in USA
I guess that would create a battery problem! So I need a legitamate sounding way that this is overcome too.

The guy in the novel is mega rich. So cost is not a problem. Though I'd like to know how much such a thing would cost if it were doable.

I'll pay for info!

How did the novel went?

That said, it is possible to "doctor" this kind of Apple Watch as long as the user isn't technically savvy. There are two components that are at play for this:

  • A Mobile Device Management (MDM) profile that ensures an app is always installed.
  • A monitoring app that masquerades as a "health" application so that it always runs in the background, which collects the said audio.
Having a constant live feed should be possible, as long as it is a cellular watch and always connected to a good data connection. This feed won't always be available though, subject to data connectivity.

Of course, always recording and transmitting audio would cause battery drain. But this capability need not to be activated 100% of the time. The app could intelligently detect when the user is active (through movement and/or heart beat measures) and activates recording only when the user is not sleeping. The app could also post-process audio and then skip/compress recording on instances where there's barely any audio detected.

To conserve battery further, the watch would only transmit data sparingly. Some good instances would be when on Wi-Fi, when there's a good connection to the paired iPhone, or when the local audio storage is almost full. The "real-time listening" feature would be activated remotely only when the observer wants to listen-in.

How much would it cost? Probably around $300K to get the app developed and about $50k/year for maintenance updates and cloud server upkeep. However that cost can be amortized to many such Apple watch units. Probably if the "husband character" has a business which does this kind of surveillance, it would cost almost nothing to get one more device under management.
