If you used a dls router...

do you have a router at home that acted as a dhcp?
if so check the logs and try to find the MAC address associated with your Mac.
Go to your "friend"'s place and check the MAC addresses.

These can't be changed, think of them as your network adapter's serial number.

Good sleuthing :)

You can check the serial number by clicking on About This Mac under the Apple menu and clicking more info.

About 3 monthes ago, my powerbook was stolen. I have this growing suspicion(sp?) that i know who stole it. The only problem is i do not have proof. I have been on the laptop in question, and it is identical. I was wondering if it is possible to find its serial number. I dont have a copy of the serial number of the stolen laptop, but is it possible to contact apple and get a hold of it somehow? any help on how to bust this guy would be great. thanks guys
Are you trying to say that someone you know stole your laptop and actually has the balls to let you use it??? Keep us updated and good luck!

They can be changed in software.

Click twice on the version number in the window. You can do this quickly in about 5 seconds.

The receipt (paper and email) should have the serial number. Confront him/her and contact the police. Show no mercy.

You learn something new everyday :)
I was taught it was stored on the adapter's ROM.

Could you please give me some pointers on changing the MAC address from software? I'm just being a curious geek :)

Thanks, and good luck to you, insider.

ps: NRD, great nick :D

The MAC address can be spoofed when networked. It CAN'T be changed on the hardware itself.

To the original poster, GOOD LUCK! Keep us posted!

if you are sure it is your set a cron job in /etc/crontab and set it to wipe out the home folders contents every month, this will teach him a lesson, you could also make it wipe the whole hdd i guess

this would mean you have like 1 month until the powerbook destorys everything and if the sucker dont give it back and your 100% sure its yours well ask for it back after the month :D

PS i am not responsible for any actions i stated :p
