So I just nabbed a 2012 Quad Core to replace my 2008 C2D. I want to set up my 08 up as a server. Let me start with the hardware:

-"The Server" 2008 C2D Mini running 10.6.8 with a 1Tb Hybrid drive and 4G ram
-2 External Drives
-1 with my iTunes music library
-1 with my iTunes movies library and Time Machine backup

-"Everyday Machine"2012 Quad Core i7 running 10.10.1 with a 1Tb spinner and 4G ram (will upgrade to 16 sooner than later)

-3rd Gen Apple TV running the latest update (just updated about an hour ago)

-2 iPhones (5 and 5s both on the latest update)

-Playstation 3

I am looking to accomplish:
-Streaming from the 2008 to all the devices listed above
-Already have the PS3 running on PSM
-Have the ATV through Home Sharing iPhones as well
-I would like to be able to migrate mine and my wife setups from the old to the new
-I would like to be able to backup the 2012 to TM and iPhones to the server
-I would like to be able to access my libraries through iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie through the 2012 from the 2008

What I have done so far:
-Set a static IP on the server
-Turned on the appropriate sharing settings on the machines
-Firewalled the server
-Accessed the server via Go>Connect to Server...
-Mounted the externals to the 2012 and set them up to auto mount on log in
-Set the settings on the 2008 to auto start on power failure, set the energy saving to never, etc, etc, etc

What I am struggling with:
-How to migrate everything properly (mine and my wife's account on the 2008)
-How to go about to setting up iTunes and iPhoto properly in order to export and import without losing everything
-It doesn't seem to be as transparent an experience as I thought it would be

Is there anything I am missing info wise?

Is there anything else I should set up or check?

Sorry for the long post, I wanted to be sure to give as much info as I could.

Thanks in advance

You should consider using Plex for the server

What data are you planning to migrate from old mac mini to new? You can easily run migration assistant and include/exclude the items you want to migrate - http://support.apple.com/en-sg/ht5872

you have 2 separate iTunes library for movies & music? does that mean that you have to toggle between the 2 to access movies or music? this is too much trouble for me, I would just stick to 1 itunes library or use Plex instead since I have contents from different drives.

Thanks for the reply.

That document answered my one question on migrating over. To answer yours I basically want to take exactly how things are on my server and Dump it on my 2012.

I should have been clearer. I have one library for iTunes but use two separate drives for storage. I just point iTunes to the separate drives. So it's all in one library it works like one drive.

Thanks again.

Any updates on your progress in getting things set up?

I've hit a wall. The more I set things up according to the instructions I've dug up the worse they get. I'm doing some home renovations which will allow me to run a wired connection to both machines and then I will start over and see if I can get it to work.

One plus I did migrate my wife's account over with ease. So that's done.

Since you asked previously, I thought I would update on my progress.

I got my server, 2012, Atv, and PS3 hardwired and all running static IPs.

Printer sharing works perfect. Connecting to the server is simple and flawless. iTunes migration has not been as clear cut as I hoped. I am thinking I will delete the items I tried to migrate and start again. I'm not sure if I'm accessing the external drives on the server (my iTunes storage drive) correctly. It seems to me, it should be more transparent than it is for me. I need to keep researching.
