I have an image on my desktop that is in Jpeg format. I can open it from the desktop, but when I try to move it to iPhoto, it comes up with this message.
Unreadable File
The following file could not be imported. (The file is in an unrecognizable format.)

I was importing a bunch of pics from my Nikon D5000 and this one wouldn't load for some reason. I have had some corrupt images before, but never one that I can look at on my desktop, but not import into iPhoto.

Have you tried saving it in another format with Preview, LiveQuartz or Ps
Plus there many other free Graphics format apps

Hope I'm not stating the obvious here :)

Hmm

I have had similar problems.

Either

-reboot
-or open it in preview (I assume thats what you meant by "open in desktop) then save it out as another format, tiff maybe?

Jpeg files unreadable in iPhoto (the file is in an unrecognized format)

I had some jpeg files which could not be read by iPhoto ("the file is in an unrecognized format"). I cured it by opening in Photoshop and then removing the Color Profile when saving as a jpeg (mine was originally Gray Gamma 2.2 which iPhoto didn't seem to like)

After that they imported fine.

Short version: if GraphicConvertor won't open it, then it ain't an image file.

The free version is fully featured, but has an annoying nag screen on startup. It also seems to optimize JPEG file sizes for web better then anything else I've come across.

Cheers!

Jim
