help with using an external DVD drive?

Hello,
My internal superdrive is screwed, so I'm trying to get an external USB drive to replace it. I've got one, listed as NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A in my hardware profile, but the Apple DVD player won't recognize it. The computer reads the DVD fine, but the player won't accept it. Any suggestions? Is there some other shareware DVD player I can install? Or is this drive just not %100 compatible with a MAC?

I'm using a MacBookPro, with 10.4.10....

Any warnings about zone setting or incompatibilities?

Otherwise, try VLC video player. I know it'll play VOBs, but don't remember if it can autoplay a complete VIDEO_TS folder. You can create a playlist of VOBs, though.

Hi, the very same thing happened to me; I'm using 10.4.10 also; and I bought an external Pioneer DVD/CD burner yesterday. With it came these instructions:

To use this drive with Apple's iApps, such as iTunes and iDVD, it may be necessary to install Christian Moeller's freeware PatchBurn software. Please download it at: http://www.patchburn.de

I installed it and everything works perfectly....

Using 10.4.10 you shouldn't need any special software (i.e. patchburn), I run an external LiteOn drive with no problems, plug it in and it should work but patchburn works flawlessly I used it when I was running in 10.3.
