Adding to simsaladimbamba's post, you need software that will work on PowerPC (that's the processor or CPU) Macs. Current Macs use Intel CPUs and if the software is Intel only it will not run on your Mac. Your Mac is running Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger), current Macs run OS X 10.6.x (Snow Leopard). Between Tiger and Snow Leopard was Mac OS X 10.5.x Leopard. Leopard is the last Mac OS that will run on a PowerPC Mac.

So in simple terms you need software that supports PowerPC Macs and will run on Mac OS X 10.4.11. This is generally older software. As an example the Firefox browser, you would need version 3.6.17. The current version 4.x will not run on PowerPC Macs. Hope this helps.

i even tried to format with the c key but there is no chimes when to hit c button

Holding down the "C" key while booting with a bootable disc in the optical drive (either CD or DVD) will cause it to boot from disc instead of the internal hard drive. The disc used must be capable of booting a PowerPC Mac and must be for a version of Mac OS that is equal to or newer than the version of Mac OS that shipped with the Mac. Booting from the optical drive alone will not reformat the hard drive, but you should still get the start up chime.

For VLC you need Universal Binary, 0.9.10. This link will download it to your Mac:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/vlc/files/0.9.10/macosx/vlc-0.9.10.dmg/download

This is the current version of VLC to run on Mac OS X 10.4.11.

Tell me what other programs you're trying to use and I'll help you find the appropriate versions for your Mac. If you notice my signature below, you'll see I'm using a G4 iMac (the generation before yours) and Mac OS X 10.4.11 the same OS as you.

DewGuy1999

can you tell me how to send you a pm please cheers

Normally you can click on a username over in the sidebar on the left and a dropdown list will appear and you can select "Send a Private Message to" and send a PM (if the other user has made receiving PM available, I have), but before you can send a Private Message or email to another forum member, these conditions from the FAQ must apply:

Why can't I send a Private Message?

Basically you need one more post (you have 4) before you're entitled to send PMs. Post a response to this message and then you should be good to go.
