I have a Verizon iPhone 5 and it currently has iOS 6.1 installed on it, but it is stuck in recovery mode showing the iTunes logo and the USB cable at the bottom, and it will not boot up.

I installed Handcent SMS and it royally messed up my phone. I was instructed to delete the preferences file for Handcent to fix a Notification Center error I was having and it ended up bricking my phone, and getting it stuck in recovery mode.

I have downloaded the installation files for iOS 6.1 and 6.1.2 and I cannot get either to be installed. Is there any way I can avoid installing iOS 6.1.3, because I really want to keep my jailbreak.

:-(

boot up your iphone holding the volume up button. if that is successful, you can uninstall handcent from cydia and then restart your phone by (holding power button, slide to shut down, and then holding the power button to boot up)

if that does not work, you may unfortunately have to restore to iOS 6.1.3

I force rebooted it by holding the home button and the power button. Then I booted it up and held the volume up and it still boots into a black background with the iTunes logo, and the USB cable

P.S. I had already un-installed Handcent SMS in cydia, but was still receiving Handcent notifications and the stock messaging app notification were not available in notification center. So I asked for help on the blog and someone suggested deleting the preferences file for Handcent and now its stuck.

Deleting a preference file does not brick a phone.

A preference file just has the settings of what app it belongs too.

You might have deleted something else by mistake. I too was having issues with handcent SMS and had to delete all handcent SMS content of my device with ifile and did not brick my phone.

Maybe something else got deleted by accident. I have jailbroken my iPhones in the past but this one is really a pain. Any ideas on how to install another iOS than 6.1.3?

as the previous poster had said, deleting a preference file for the tweak should not be affecting the boot up of the phone. especially when you said the tweak was already removed.

there is currently no way to restore to an iOS that is not 6.1.3. where did you delete this preference file? what was the name of it? you may have deleted the wrong file

Since you have an iP5, that is not possible. Only iP4 and below can downgrade. Since 6.1.3 is out and 6.1.2 is not being signed any more, you're stuck.

You're sure you can't boot into safe mode? It's kinda trick to do if the iTunes logo is present. The timing has to be just right.

Check out some YouTube videos on how to do this They can be very helpful.

I have tried even installing 6.1.3 (with the regular restore option in iTunes) on two computers and it won't do anything. I guess a trip to the Apple store is in my near future :-(

Try this. Turn the phone off, start computer and open iTunes, get sync cable, plug cable into phone, hold home button down, plug other end of cable into USB port on computer, keep holding the home button down until iTunes sees phone and identifies that its in DFU mode, click restore.

I was in the same situation as you. I could not get passed the the iTunes logo on the phone.
