Heres an idea. Instead of having a widescreen TV, a DVD-player AND an appleTV, why not instead, just have one single device? An appledesigned TV with integrated DVD-slot like on the imac, and an integtrated appleTV that syncs all music, and opens the possibility for renting movies directly.
Aluminium? White plastic? Two or three sizes, and different options for storage. Apple, are you listening?

would be a good idea.
but better would be just a dvd player, apple tv, tivo (or similar product) and a cable box like cox cable.

tv's are 1 in a million.
cable box is 1 or 2
dvd player is 1 in 40
tivo 1 in 15

it would be better to capitalize on the smaller niche
 
No thank you! Apple 23 inch cinema displays are already almost $1,000 dollars. I don't want to pay $5,000 for an :apple: branded TV.
 
So what do you do throw out your 50 inch TV every 3 to 5 years when it is no longer powerful enough to modern software:eek:?

Maybe if the computer industry settled on a standard for component sizes such as ATX. Then when the computer is obsolete you can just pull the hardware and switch it with new components of the same dimensions.

On a side note I wish they had done this with laptops so that you could build your own like with desktop PC's. Just think take your old dell with a perfectly fine screen, switch in a new ASUS board and third party battery.

nice dream product. I would definately buy one! Quite frankly, i would be happy with just the DVD drive on the appleTV. I cant justify the price unless one is included. But if it came with a DVR too? Im sold!

The DVD drive defeats the selling point of the Apple TV as a conduit for rentals and iTS movie purchases.

And the DVR defeats the conduit for selling iTunes TV shows.

And while yes, every movie and every TV show is not available on iTunes, it would still cannibalize those that were.

The DVD drive doesnt cannibalize itunes sales... it just lets me play the DVDs we already own!
I agree about the DVR sadly
Remember, this thing is being marketed for a "hobbyist" and as one myself, id rather have a little versatitily
 
I personally like to have my choice of individual components.

I know you Mac addicts aren't used to upgradability, but what if I want to buy a bigger TV or a projector, or what if I dump DVD and/or Blu Ray for the next hot format (assuming Apple TV video isn't the next king)?

I think the best solution is to have what you do right now. Seperate components that work with a variety of configuration that let your system grow or get replaced one link at a time.

That said, it would probably be a pretty nice selling point to have a TV with Apple TV capability built-in. I don't know about the DVD player, though.
 
NO NO NO!

I prefer to pick and choose a nice TV. If Apple TV where what you described, I would never buy it. And, with Apple TV you don't even need a dvd player anymore, that's kind of the point. IMO.

Reminds me of those old TVs with a built in VHS tape deck/DVD drive. No thanks - Im sure there is a market for something like that - they did/do make TCs with DVD/VHS decks in them - but its a small market and all it takes is buying one once and having the DVD drive break to make you never buy an all in one again. JMO
 
I think the whole idea of :apple: having the :apple:TV without a DVD player is that they want to encourage:

A) Digital Downloads
B) For the user to have ease with streaming digital media around the home

I'm all for this. The future is digital whether we like it or not. I would much prefer to buy my music on Vinyl's/ CD's & films on DVD's/ HD-DVD/ BluRay disc's, but give it another 10-20 years & you won't have a player, you'll be watching the film down you 5Gb internet connection with a resolution of 2048p or higher.

I'm happy putting all my media on my mac & streaming around the house. I have more control of who listen's/ Watch's certain material. When I have kids, I can put the whole kids film's collection on an :apple:TV so they can't access other material...

I don't want a machine to have my DVD player/ :apple:TV/ TV Screen all in one box, I have no control on the quality of components. I like the :apple:TV for what it is, I can carry it to a friends house to watch a film without damaging/ loosing my disc's. Same goes with my music.

Once I'm able to rent films here in the UK, then I shall do so for certain films.

Its just really down to personal preference...
 
There were actually some rumors a couple years ago that Apple might introduce a 4x" plasma with a built in drive , cpu, etc, but who knows what truth there was or if it was simply a development project that never saw the light of day.
