To change the root user password, in the terminal type “su root” enter “alpine” as your password. Then type “passwd” and enter your new password twice. It's very easy to do.

When you SSH in to your iPhone, you should already be in as root. So all you have to use is the standard Unix "passwd" command. :)

That's only if you ssh in as root. But no matter, remember whoever you ssh in as, there are two users and two passwords to change. As root, run "passwd" to change root's and "passwd mobile" to change mobile's.

Not sure why you'd log in as a limited user, mobile doesn't have the privledges necessary for most functions you'd want to perform. :) But yes, changing mobile's PW is a good idea as well.

is changing the password necessary for security purposes?
Oh heck yeah. :)

but what benefit does this have?
The benefit that no one knows what your password is and can't log in to your device?

Is SSH something thats enabled by default when you jailbreak? or something you enable afterwards? What if you dont use SSH on your phone. I pretty much jailbroke my phone to unlock it, i dont really download jb apps other than GV Mobile.
Should I worry about this as well?
Thanks!!

No, you have to install the OpenSSH package. If you didn't install it, you are fine.

if you dont have it...your not cool. i know all my friends have ssh enabled on their phones.

Or you don't want it... You if you have mobile terminal, iFile and netatalk you're fine without it. Although, even with netatalk you'll want to change the default password in MobileTerminal.

I use mobileterminal and ifile as well. I do not have OPENSSH so I should be fine right?

If you have netatalk and your phone could connect to wifi then you should change this as well.

You can do it from mobile terminal as well though.

just run the same commands.

Open Mobile Terminal and run the command below to change the "mobile" password.
Code:
passwd

Next switch to root
Code:
su root

and run the
Code:
passwd
command again to change the root password. It's fine if you change them both to the same thing. Just make sure they are different from the default passwords which are
Code:
alpine
.

if i installed openssh..can i uninstall it and be safe?

Read the rest of this thread. If you have netatalk you would still POSSIBLY be vulnerable.

Really people... All you have to do is change your password as documented above and you have nothing to worry about.

Do you leave your linksys router with the default password? Hopefully not. Unplugging it isn't the "propper" solution. Just change your passwords.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Thanks everyone. You convinced me to change the passwords. Very simple process. I changed both root and mobile to... :)

Why I just can't login to the SSH with the password "alpine" ? neither on PC or iphone.
I've tried the terminal app and turned on the SSH and wifi.

My iboot is 359.3.2 which means the tethered jailbreak one.

tks

You have to have OpenSSH installed.

Did you just toggle the setting or did you install OpenSSH from Cydia first?
Yes,I've done all those steps.
Install openssh and turn it on by Sbsetting, but i just can't login with any method, by terminal or Winscp or putty.
It says password incorrect or access denied everytime.
:(:(:(
