Haven't fully looked into this, but sounds interesting. Could be promise here if it makes it through.
It's kind of useless if you don't own a Mac, but I still appreciate the guys efforts. I still wonder why Google doesn't get off its duff and introduce a similar service. God knows I'm sick and tired of messaging not working at my house because I have to use a microcell. Instead Google putzes around with Hangouts, then axes it, what a waste of R&D.
Obviously won't be a main stream service as most wont be exposed to something like this but for many enthusiasts who either carrier both devices and switch between them regularly or someone contemplating the switch will have a solution to the iMessage problem.
Google can't offer a service comparable to iMessage as Android currently works because that would REQUIRE them to make that messaging service the default and lock it down. Hangouts could've worked the same way but Android allows you to set any messaging app as your default for SMS. Everyone using an Android phone has a Google account yet very few of my contacts that use Android actually used Hangouts.
Shame really. I hate using sms/mms. Using Google photos to share content makes things a bit less painful though.
Presumably it's within their capability to provide a backend service, linked to Google Play services, that any messaging app could tap into.
The annoying thing about Hangouts is it takes user desire to set it up. iMessage setup just happens.

I'm in Europe and not on iPhone. But I still don't use WhatsApp a huge amount. The reason being I get unlimited domestic texts on my relatively cheap sim plan, so I just use standard texts most of the time. I think the majority of people on contract-based plans probably have unlimited texts.
The only times I use WhatsApp are for picture, group, or international messaging.

The danger of course is the 'middle man' aspect. Essentially opening prospect of 'intervention' along the journey and making it a security risk.
That's going to change. There's rumble that they are making desktop clients for WhatsApp. Right now there is WhatsApp web offered by the company - but it's not the same as how iMessage works.
No, he probably hates it because SMS/MMS is garbage compared to any number of messaging apps and services. Limited characters and compressed media....what's to love?
Once again, hate? An emotional that should only be reserved for things or folk that have seriously done you wrong. Sms is not on that list.
It's not that serious. Unfortunately, expressions are limited to another's perception of them. Doesn't help that tone doesn't translate very well over the web.
I equate it to the expression "I hate it when that happens". Obviously not literal but more of a general phrase.
Been using Viber since 2012, so I never cared for iMessages. Glad their recent updated added encryption and ability to hide conversations. Everytime I "load" my balance, the promos offers free Viber to us anyway just like Facebook. And I have Google Voice # since 2011. I can text anyone in the States for free even if I am on their desktop site or through my Gmail.
I think iMessages is such an overrated thing considering it is BBM ripoff and only available to iOS users. Cross platform is the way to go if you aren't so myopic abd closed like Apple and you want a greater reach to be connected with people all over the world who don't necessarily own an Apple product.
For every millions of people who own Apple products and use their services, there is a greater amount of people who use Android and Google services like Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, and Google Now. We can buy Apple products but alot of us are still connected to Google in some way.

Ubiquity. Something lacking in every other messaging platform.
Over here most carriers either on PAYG or BillPay tarrifs grant you unlimited SMS to all other mobiles and I have never had an issue regarding 'text limit' to other users in years. Long SMS are stitched together seamlessly and sender or recipient here would have never known there was a character limit in the first place.
So yeah, I have no problem with SMS and given Ireland's patchy 3G/4G network - I trust an SMS to reach a recipient quicker than any other method (FB messenger, WhatsApp, Viber, Hangouts).
What I particularly hate about the likes of Viber is the unsolicited messages and detritus that you receive. For that reason alone I uninstalled and would never trust, and likewise I am not a fan of WhatsApp either.
FB Messenger is a necessary evil for anyone messaging via Facebook Desktop to you.

Completely agree. That why I like iMessage so much because it takes the ubiquity of SMS/MMS and adds an improved later on top for all iPhone users, a group that happens to dominate my contact list. As you stated, there's no other messaging option (here in the US at least) that approaches this benefit of SMS.
It's such a missed opportunity for Google. With such a huge portion of smartphone users, if they would just lock down SMS to their own messaging client, they could dominate messaging. Who do you upset by doing this, third party SMS app devs? So be it, IMO.
T-Mobile USA and att have "advanced messenging. Supports larger text sizes and video calling. Based on RCS?
