I tried f.lux and found it to be too much effort to configure to my liking and use. Night Shift on my iPhone is perfect—and I don't have to think about it. I was hoping we would see it on the Mac. I suppose it could be added in a later beta, but I doubt it.

What is so problematic about it?
I didn't say problematic, I said it was too much effort. In my opinion, the pre-built settings in f.lux are all unusable, and tweaking them is something I just don't want to bother doing, nor should I have to just to get a screen display that doesn't look like a rainbow puked on it. The iOS feature just works—you turn it on and you're good to go.

I realize that it's all subjective, and that f.lux is fantastic for a lot of people. I just find it to be more work than it's worth. I just use the keyboard to turn down the brightness for a few minutes when I first turn on the computer in the morning.

I really do not know what you are talking about. NightShift has just one mode and you have to choose the colour too. F.lux offers exactly the same as the ‘classic mode’ and it has the same slider.

Would have liked that too. f.lux is a bit dodgy (It has trouble with a game a play a lot), and as mentioned above, the standard settings are not very useful.

I'm sure Apple will copy f.lux at some point, put it on Mac OS X, sorry macOS, and try to say they invented it. They seem to be pretty good at innovation, no sorry, I mean copying every idea they can get their hands on these days.

They won't do it this year but might do it in the future so as to give people reason to upgrade.

That being said, there are no scientific data to support night time mode as being anything other than a placebo.

That is not what a placebo is. A placebo is medicine or a therapeutic measure that has been scientifically proved to have no effect beyond psyche. This is not a placebo, because there is no conclusive evidence for that.

It's definitely more comfortable on the eyes though, especially in the dark.

It's definitely easier on the eyes and I find I get eyestrain without using f.lux on any screen. For me I use f.lux not because it is supposedly able to help with sleep (as it reduces blue light) but because it helps make a computer screen/phone more comfortable to look at especially during the night

That being said, there are no scientific data to support night time mode as being anything other than a placebo.

There is evidence that suggests blue light can affect sleep. I don't find f.lux makes me any more tired than normal when it's on, but it certainly makes my screen less straining to look at.

i've been using f.lux for years, and have turned a lot of people on to it. it is surprising, though, not to see apple implementing nightshift on the OS, wonder what they're waiting for....

Here
wonder what they're waiting for....

Beta 2?

I'd like it just because I prefer to use first party services and keep third party apps and utilities to a minimum. If Nightshift came to OS X (sorry, macOS) than it'd be one less app on my system and one less thing to remember to install on a new machine.

Perhaps they don’t want to devote resources to it, given the alternatives. For iOS they had no choice.

Agree. I think it took less than 1 minute to set it up.
Choose a color, just like in Night Shift and the approximate time it gets dark or you start going to bed, click done.

Yeah, I was very surprised when they didn't include it with Sierra. It seemed like low hanging fruit. Then again, Night Shift came in a point update to iOS, so maybe we will be seeing it in Sierra, who knows. That Siri response attached above seems pretty promising - at least she seems to know what Night Shift is on the Mac.

That's the thing though - Night Shift just gives you the option to switch it on and off like a light switch, but with Flux, you need to set specific times for it to come on and off, or let it come on at sunset. (I've played around a lot with it since Night Shift came to iOS and unless I'm missing something obvious, I haven't found a similar easy on/easy off way of controlling Flux). I have an erratic work schedule and don't want Flux to come on at the same time every day or at sunset. I want it to just switch on when I want it to go on. Night Shift on iOS does that beautifully, and I too often prefer built in options over having to install third party apps which may or may not work after future updates.

That is the point. It is supposed to mimic sunset and sunrise so that the eyes adjust naturally to the colour temperature. Toggling it kind of defeats the purpose of it, because then you are not really using it as intended.

You can enable the ‘working late’ profile or go to the menubar icon and select ‘disable for an hour’ or ‘disable until sunrise’ (which you can turn off again after you are done), which gives you plenty of options too.

Does anyone else not actually find the yellowing of the screen helpful in any way? I have no trouble sleeping right after staring at a bright web page for hours. But I do find the yellow color to be very harsh on my eyes.

At night, I'd rather have a true dark mode, so I just press Cmd+Alt+Ctrl+8 to invert the colors, that does the trick for text based stuff. It would be nice if there would be an option to darken the interface and swap websites into some kind of dark mode, without affecting the color of images and videos.

Also, for anyone working with images or video, your colors will be way off if you forget to turn off color shifting which can seriously mess up your work. Even if you do, your eyes will have adjusted to the yellow, so your vision will be biased towards blue for several minutes. Let's say you're on a website and then you have to color balance an image - you're screwed, because even if you turn f.lux off, your eyes are now messed up for quite a while. I kind of expect my computer to always display consistent colors no matter the time of day, since content you create has to be independent of the environment in which you created it.

Well then...I guess I'm not "using it as intended," but toggling Night Shift on and off works very, very well for me on iOS. It's just less harsh on my eyes when I'm working in a dark room at night, and therefore it does probably help when I decide to go to sleep because my eyes aren't as strained at that point. So no, it doesn't "defeat the purpose" for me whatsoever. Each user is different, remember, and who's to say how each person should use it anyway? If it works, it works, and this method does work for me.

You can enable the ‘working late’ profile or go to the menubar icon and select ‘disable for an hour’ or ‘disable until sunrise’ (which you can turn off again after you are done), which gives you plenty of options too.

This still is more effort than Night Shift's simple on/off option, which is all I want. Again, I don't have to mess with settings or really have to think about it that much. Once I used Night Shift on iOS I saw just how useful that simple option is for me, so all I'm saying is, it'd be nice if Apple brought this to the Mac too. For those of you who still want more advanced options there's nothing stopping you from continuing to use Flux.
