On my HomePod, I listen to playlists containing multiple artists. The originals come from many sources, CDs, purchases on Apple & Amazon, etc. They have different volume levels, as is to be expected.

Now, I’d think the iCloud Music Library and the HomePod computer would be smart enough to realize there is a basic volume level, and dynamically adjust the volume of the HomePod to make each song play at approximately the same level. But, of course, it doesn’t, and I’m continually telling my HomePod ‘volume up’ or ‘volume down.’

Am I being realistic that this is something HomePod could/should do?

Open the Home App > Long Press/3DTouch on your HomePod > Details > turn on "Sound Check".

This'll solve your volume level woes as it does pretty much what you've described you'd like.
