11.4 on iPad Pro 9.7. I thought the whole point of "hey Siri" was so that you can hands free issue commands, but unless I manually turn off the screen, after invoking it, it'll sit there on the Siri screen and drain the entire battery. even with the screen auto lock set to 10 mins. this happens frequently. its also worth noting that Siri actually refuses to turn off the screen using voice commands.

I really wish iOS features weren't so riddled with bugs/poor implementations. I feel like I'm constantly having to reset settings for one thing or another. the amount of time I spend wiping settings and reconfiguring is truly absurd. I really really hope iOS 12 delivers on being less of a mess, because this os is rapidly becoming more frustrating to maintain than the benefits of its sometimes-working features.

There are definitely some oddities that some come across here and there. That said, for the most part it doesn't seem like people really have to go through much in the way of resetting to get something working.

that certainly hasn't been my experience, unforuntately. :( I've had issues with Siri, bluetooth, iCloud, continuity, handoff, Apple Pay, messages, wifi, LTE, App Store downloads, battery drains and on and on. often times with these issues cropping up over and over again, and the only way to fix them tends to be cumbersome troubleshooting techniques like settings resets that require all preferences to be re-configured, iCloud logouts that force a number of re-authentication steps (and blows away all your Apple Pay cards), or full blown restores as a last resort.

I of course understand these types of issues will crop up on occasion, but I'm not lying when I say my iOS experience as time has gone on (and using multiple devices, so its not a simple hardware defect) has led to having to deal with these sorts of maintenance steps weekly if not even more frequently. also I understand that with greater complexity comes greater chances of glitches, but there comes a tipping point where the frustrations of the glitchiness outweighs the benefits of the functions.

it sounds like apple has recognized this with their performance and stability focus on iOS 12, I just really hope it delivers.

as for the Siri issue described, if there's a simpler way to resolve this issue I welcome any advice. as it stands, the unreliable behaviour means I can't really use 'hey Siri' since having to go over and check that the device has turned off defeats the purpose of trying to use it handsfree in the first place. sigh.


edit: just in case you were thinking I'm exaggerating... my iPad just now developed a stuck messages icon badge showing 2 unread messages. rebooting doesn't fix it. looking online for other posts of people with this issue, many report the only way to fix it is a backup and restore. so that was a whopping 1-hour between issues requiring a settings reset or restore.

I definitely wasn't saying that to say anything about your particular case, more commenting on the general aspect of it that comes up in the second part of the OP. There are definitely some people that are dealing with more issues than others, and hopefully an update or something else (like a full clean reinstall perhaps) would resolve most of those for those people.

Siri doesn't linger on any of my devices like that. I just tried on my iPhone and iPad (although its an Air 2 so it needs to be plugged in for Hey Siri).

I had that identical message bug. It happened when I was having problems with messages in iCloud and in the process of turning it off, back on, deleting messages, etc 2 messages stuck. Like mentioned the only thing that worked for me was restoring from an iCloud back up. Since I use iCloud Photo Library and Messages in iCloud the process took about 20-25 minutes to restore everything to near identical as the way it was, minus the 2 messages of course. Biggest pain was setting up ApplePay credit cards again but that isn't difficult...just more involved.

This will likely fix your Siri issue and clean up some junk as well.

thanks and agreed on its own it wouldn't be so bad. my frustration is that I've been through the rodeo of setting resets, restoring from backups, doing clean installs etc and yes it usually fixes the problem at hand, but when another problem pops up barely a few days later, and the advice to again "just do a fresh install" comes up over and over... it starts to really sour me on the platform. not to mention the fact that I can almost never depend on any particular feature because things become broken so often.

maybe I am a weird edge case, but it just feels like death by a thousand ongoing paper cuts, and my frustration is genuine. :(

I understand your frustration, I went through the same thing. If you could of heard me irl you'd have thought I was a psychopath.

Its par for the course though. The software is complicated and its trying to cater to everyone and eventually it will fail. The restore from iCloud back up I did was the first time my iPad had been reset in over 3 years or so of constant us. Many devices would have been well outside their useful lifespan in that time.

I would make sure everything is turned on and backed up and all sync then restore from iCloud. Your experience may vary but I found it easy enough that I will likely just do that before signing out of iCloud and such to try to fix issues. And while I would have needed to do it in the end I was impressed with how well it went.
