Hey What Do You Know!!! 0 RPM FAN!!

Once upon a time there was this naive young boy who thought the Mac OSX, Leopard was the best invention in the world. He discovered more and more about how he could incorporate all the programs into his life. iCal, iTunes, Spaces, and Stacks were constantly used in his life as a student. Then one day iStat Pro and SMCfancontrol all read a big fat 0 in the rpm section. The boy panicked. He then went to an authorized apple service provider and gave the macbook to them. This boy does not have applecare but still has the limited one year warranty until January 2009. They gave the macbook back and the fan was working again!! They warned that it was not the fan that was broken but the OS. Then one week later the fan did the same thing. The boy panicked again and reinstalled the OS and erasing everything that he had on his macbook, after backing up folders on a External HD of course. In the end after 2 hours of reinstalling he found out the fan was still...at 0 rpm.

Now he is pissed and is writing on macrumors...hoping to find answers.

From a newbie point of view, sounds like the sensor for the fan is fried or something tbh if a reformat hasn't fixed it (and yet the fan is going or else your comp would've died already).

To the OP:

Take it back to the Apple store! Apple has the best support and customer service of any computer vendor. Take advantage of it especially since your machine is still under warranty.

Thanks everyone I might take my laptop to the apple store, but it's just frustrating.

Also I don't have a car because i live next to the college and the high for today is 110 so i can't walk or bike...or rather I don't want to.

I just don't understand why the fan worked for a week then it died again...

My daughter's MacBook Pro has a dead right hand side fan; doesn't spin and reports 0 RPM. The left one still functions. Some software will report only one of the two fans despite each one having the ability to run at different RPMs (including 0, if its broken that is).

smcFanControl will display the individual fan's RPMs in the Preferences, but only one (don't remember which) in the menu bar fan speed display.

I'll have to get her machine fixed, but keep hesitating because its out of warranty. Might just buy the part off eBay and do it myself...

I don't think the sensor is fried cause then the temperature readings are still there.

I wouldn't do that it might not even be the fan that's the problem it might be the software. I'll tell you when i go to the apple store today.

Sadly I went yesterday through bus, and BART (the bay area rapid transit), then i arrived at the apple store and noticed a huge line, and I asked if that line was for the 3g. Then i went back home.

Whats On Campus Apple Repair?

Some colleges and universities have an authorized Apple Repair shop on campus. At one time, I know Rutgers University did here in NJ. You may want to check with the Office of Information Technology or whatever the name is of the IT Department at your school to see if that is offered.

That happened to me - you can replace the fan yourself but the error might be the logic board. it *was* the fan for me though.

OP - take it elsewhere. A dying fan will sometimes run - it sounds like they did nothing IMO

BTW, have you considered the possibility that it's just not hot enough for your fan to run? I don't see why no one else has thought of this; if you're using an external cooling solution your internal fan is certainly less likely to turn on.
