Hi PCI fan speed Mac Pro 5,1 GTX 680 Mavericks

I've got the GTX 680 in slot-2. Pre-Mavericks this card ran around 600-800 rpms. Right now, it's running 2248.

Anyone else having these problems? Rumor has it the next dot release of Mavericks is right around the corner and will include video drivers. Perhaps NVidia will also have the new Mavericks drivers.

I'm not doing anything special here. Out of 10MB, I'm using 6 and have 4 free. I've got 1-2% CPU utilization (3690). I'm running Chrome and Safari right now. I frequently have Xcode running, but not right now.

I did notice that PepperFlashPlayer (Chrome) was red in the task monitor. I killed it, but I've still got the high fan speed several minutes later (2248).

GTX680 in Slot 2 and SonnetTempo SSD Pro in Slot1.
This seems to confuse the SMC every Coldstart.

After some time they are spinning down to 900.
This is really a bug in 10.9, 10.8 is ok for that.

I wrote a small AS, to adjust at login (they remain persistant until reboot):

0af3 = 700
0c80 = 800
0e10 = 900

I never saw those Fans getting much faster than before for normal use.
For heavy usage just reboot and the autoatic settings will be back.

I have this problem on my 4,1 Mac Pro with a GTX 680.

I just run "OpenGL Extension Viewer" and hit test\benchmark, after that my fans run nice and quiet.
 
yep, but it comes back every time on heavy load...

My Son has a 4,1 with similiar setup (10.9 and GTX680) and no problems.
Seems to be only related to 5,1.
 
I've put my GTX680 in slot 1. 2009 Mac with 5.1 firmware. After cold start I run OpenGL Viewer. After that the pci fan slow down to around 800. Even under heavy load it stays low.
Putting the GTX680 in slot 2 gives around 1200rpm even after the OpenGL viewer test.
 
Slot 1 was first try of course.
In my case it is the combination of GTX680 and Sonnet TempoPro.
I tried all possible options, no change in Fan Speed.

Read somewhere here it is caused by PCIe Cards at boot claiming strange
values from PSU which makes SMC think a lot of power is needed and spins
up the fans.


Removing GPU or SSD solves the problem, but this is not a real solution :)

So i just tweak the SMC until hopefully 10.9.x will address this Issue.
 
Hi,

cool thing, getting the MP more silent.
But it doesn't control the PCIe Expansion Slot and PSU Fans,
they are not driven by a temperature sensor.
The Fan Speed of those is calculated by Power Consumption of installed PCIe Cards. And i think there is the error.

Hey, can that be used on other graphics card as well? I have GTX 460 and I use SMCFancontrol although it's not listing the graphics : / Cheers!
 
Have you tried using the OpenGL Extensions app? I don't cold start my machine often, but every time I do, I run one of the tests in that app after booting, and my fan behaves normally until I cold start again. It's just a band-aid, of course, but it works for me.

Its the broken gpu power management of mavericks if you use certain apps gpu stuck at full speed until restart
