I am planning to get my first Mac (since the old LC3 days) soon - a new MBP. I was wondering if Mac's support or plan to support hibernation? I know the suspend to ram feature works very quickly and is great but from people I've asked it seems to use battery very slowly but it still seems like waste of power if you know you won't use your laptop for a night or more. Is there any way to get a mac to sleep to disk and use no power. Does anyone know how much power an MB/MBP uses in normal sleep mode (i.e. how long does it take to discharge)?

thanks

Welcome. :)

I have no actual figures but I can safely say that I find OSX's sleep function far more reliable (and safer) than XP's hibernate function. If I want to leave my computer overnight without it discharging any battery, I shut it down.

Gotta say, I wish OS X had a "hibernate" feature, like Win XP! You can leave a Win XP laptop in "hibernate" for days, and there's no battery drain at all - very nice to have a fairly quick startup, with all your programs/pages open (some have to shutdown, like Media Player, for example). Putting my current TiBok to "sleep" still drains the battery quite a bit just overnight, maybe 15% over 24 hours.

Maybe it'll be different with my new toy, arriving next Thursday!

:D

The most recent Mac portables (last PBs, MBPs) do have 99% of what it would take to hibernate. The safe sleep feature is pretty much hibernation, but it only kicks in if the battery dies.

I believe the new mbp has a hibernate feature. Can someone confirm on this? I read earlier of a guy complaining on this feature, because a demo model at the store was acting funny when entering hibernation. It wouldn't wake up, but I believe that the new ones have this feature. Although the sleep function is pretty good. I've left my computer sleep for a while.

Hibernation

Hibernation is a good thing to have, but I am not so sure that dumping 1G+ of data whenever you turn the machine off is such a good idea. It's possible that I'm wrong, but I feel that it would shorten the drive's lifespan.
